Vikings hope for best with Peterson
Associated press

Adrian Peterson was placed on injured reserve Friday by the Vikings, another sign that his time with the team could be over following surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee.

NFL teams can pull one player off injured reserve per season, so the Vikings would be able to activate the leading rusher in franchise history sometime down the stretch if he were to heal swiftly. The likelihood of him returning this year, though, is slim given the typical recovery time for the injury he suffered last weekend in the game against Green Bay.

The move created an opening on the active roster the Vikings didn’t immediately fill.

Also Friday, left tackle Matt Kalil had surgery to repair a labrum tear in his right hip. He was operated on by team physician Chris Larson, who performed Peterson’s procedure at Twin Cities Orthopedics the day before.

The Vikings called Kalil’s procedure successful, but he'll miss the first game of his career Sunday when the Vikings (2-0) visit Carolina.

Kalil, who will be replaced by T.J. Clemmings, also was placed on injured reserve.

Kalil struggled through the first two games at less than full strength. He has started all 66 games, plus two in the playoffs, since the Vikings made him the fourth pick in the 2012 draft out of USC. Kalil’s contract will expire after this season.

Three Vikings starters were sent into surgery this week.

Defensive tackle Sharrif Floyd had an arthroscopic procedure to clean up cartilage damage in his right knee done Thursday by James Andrews. No timetable for his return has been provided by the team, but Floyd had a similar operation done last season on the left knee.

He missed three four games then, and coach Mike Zimmer has not hidden his disappointment with Floyd’s inability to stay healthy.

The only good news on the injury front this week was the return of cornerback Xavier Rhodes (right knee) to practice. He was a limited participant Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, but he’s on track to be available against the Panthers.

Wide receiver Stefon Diggs suffered a groin injury this week that prompted the Vikings to keep him out of practice Friday, but Zimmer said that was a precautionary decision. Diggs was not listed on the injury report, meaning he should play Sunday.

Bucs TE arrested, released

The Buccaneers waived tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins, hours after the third-year pro was arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence.

The Florida Highway Patrol said in a news release that Seferian-Jenkins, a second-round draft pick out of the University of Washington in 2014, was driving between 75 and 80 miles per hour on Interstate 275 when the football player’s vehicle cut in front of a trooper’s cruiser and began weaving.

Sergeant Steve Gaskins said Seferian-Jenkins was charged with DUI and violation of an ignition interlock device restriction from an arrest in Washington in 2013. The player refused a breath test at the Hillsborough County Jail.

‘‘We are very disappointed in today’s news,’’ Bucs general manager Jason Licht said in a statement. ‘‘After careful consideration, we felt this was the right decision at this time.’’

The move was announced about two hours after practice, which Seferian-Jenkins did not attend.

Seferian-Jenkins had three receptions for 44 yards and one touchdown in two games this season. He started 12 of 16 games he appeared in the previous two years and has 45 career receptions for 603 yards and seven TDs.

The Bucs promoted tight end Alan Cross from the practice squad to fill the roster opening.

Bills’ Watkins ailing

Bills coach Rex Ryan said wide receiver Sammy Watkins’s chances of playing are ‘‘probably not real good’’ against the Cardinals on Sunday. Watkins did not practice all week.

Watkins has been hampered by foot soreness in recent weeks. He underwent foot surgery this offseason.

Ryan added that Watkins had his injured foot stepped on at a walkthrough practice earlier in the week, which ‘‘probably didn’t help.’’

The Bills will also be without left tackle Cordy Glenn, who has yet to return to practice after suffering an ankle injury in Week 1. Tight end Charles Clay (knee), wide receiver Greg Salas (groin), and cornerback Ronald Darby (hamstring) are questionable.

Wait and see for Marshall

The Jets might not know until kickoff if they'll have Brandon Marshall on the field against the Chiefs.

The star wide receiver is listed as questionable and coach Todd Bowles said Marshall will likely be a game-time decision as he continues to recover from knee and foot injuries.

Marshall returned to practice on a limited basis after sitting out earlier in the week. He had his left knee bend awkwardly beneath him during a play at Buffalo last Thursday night. Marshall’s left foot was also hurt on the play.

The Jets will assess Marshall’s knee and foot Saturday, and it could come down to how he feels Sunday before kickoff.

On the other side, the Chiefs will be without starting offensive lineman Parker Ehinger and backup Jah Reid, and likely without star running back Jamaal Charles for Sunday’s game against the Jets.

Ehinger will miss his second straight game with a concussion. Reid is out with a knee injury.

Meanwhile, Charles was listed as doubtful for the Jets on Friday’s injury report, and it is becoming increasingly likely that the four-time Pro Bowl player will not play before the Chiefs’ bye.

Bears’ Cutler doubtful

Bears quarterback Jay Cutler is doubtful and top receiver Alshon Jeffery is questionable for Sunday’s game at Dallas because of injuries. Cutler left Monday’s loss to Philadelphia because of a sprained right thumb. Brian Hoyer has been working with the first team and is expected to start. Jeffery says he developed knee soreness against the Eagles . . . Add cornerback Joe Haden to the Browns’ lengthy bumped-and-bruised list. The two-time Pro Bowler has a groin issue and is listed as questionable for Sunday’s game at Miami. Haden did not take part in the team’s walk-through on Friday and coach Hue Jackson said it’s too early to say if Haden will be able to play against the Dolphins . . . Dolphins running back Arian Foster has been ruled out of Sunday’s game against Cleveland because of a groin injury. Foster’s absence means second-year pro Jay Ajayi will likely make his first NFL start. Rookie Kenyan Drake is also expected to see significant action . . . The Jaguars will be without starting left tackle Kelvin Beachum against Baltimore on Sunday. Beachum, who spent Sunday night in a San Diego hospital, remains in the NFL’s concussion protocol.
