Sheary, Penguins stop Capitals for wild OT win
ASSOCIATED PRESS

Conor Sheary scored 34 seconds into overtime and the Penguins ended the Washington Capitals’ nine-game winning streak Monday night with a wild 8-7 victory in Pittsburgh that included nine second-period goals.

Sheary had two goals and an assist for the Penguins, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Evgeni Malkin picked up his 11th career hat trick during a frenetic second period, and Sidney Crosby collected his NHL-leading 27th goal to go with three assists. Bryan Rust and Nick Bonino also scored, and Matt Murray got the win despite allowing seven goals on 28 shots.

The Penguins trailed 3-0 before scoring six goals in less than 11 minutes in the second period, more goals than the Capitals had allowed in a game all season.

Pittsburgh led 6-5 after 40 minutes.

Lars Eller tallied twice for Washington, and T.J. Oshie, Brett Connolly, Nicklas Backstrom, Justin Williams, and Andre Burakovsky also scored. Braden Holtby made 21 saves before being relieved by Philipp Grubauer (eight saves).

Pittsburgh’s rally didn’t start with a goal but an elbow. Forward Patric Hornqvist hit Oshie in the corner, leading to a wrestling match with Daniel Winnik that sent both off for roughing.

And just like that, the floodgates opened.

Malkin’s 19th of the season, a one-timer from the right circle, put the Penguins on the board 6:28 into the second, sparking a span of 10:51 in which the goalies on both sides found themselves fishing the puck out of the net a combined eight times. It looked like a hockey video game with the setting set to ‘‘rookie.’’

Some were pretty, like Sheary’s backhand deflection by Holtby that came after a perfect cross-ice feed from Crosby that split the legs of Washington’s Karl Alzner. Some were odd, like Rust’s innocent flip from behind the net that ricocheted off Alex Ovechkin’s skate and by a surprised Holtby.

The Capitals hadn’t allowed more than five goals in a game this season. Pittsburgh put up six in less than 11 minutes, the last coming as Malkin jammed the puck by a sprawled Grubauer. The fans, perhaps a bit stunned, waited a beat before tossing their hats onto the ice after the Russian star’s third goal. Referees spent several moments reviewing it to see if Hornqvist — sliding on his stomach — interfered with Grubauer. When it was confirmed, another handful of hats flew from the stands to celebrate Pittsburgh’s first six-goal period since March 21, 2000 against the New York Islanders.

And neither team was done. Crosby gave the Penguins a 7-5 lead 5:55 into the third, but Oshie and Eller beat Murray to tie it and assure each team of at least a point.

Red Wings 1, Canadiens 0 — Thomas Vanek broke a scoreless tie late in the second period and rookie Jared Coreau made 18 saves to earn his second shutout as Detroit beat Montreal to win consecutive games at home for the first time since starting the season 4-0 at Joe Louis Arena.

Vanek scored his team-leading 12th goal when he redirected a shot past Carey Price (18 saves) with 1:36 left in the second period.

Sabres 4, Stars 1 — Returning after missing 30 games with a groin injury, Tyler Ennis scored 19 seconds into the first period and Jack Eichel had two goals as Buffalo defeated visiting Dallas.

Jake McCabe also scored and Robin Lehner made 31 saves.

Radek Faksa scored for the Stars and Kari Lehtonen made 25 saves.

Eichel gave Buffalo a 3-1 lead 7:07 into the second period on the power play. It was Eichel’s first goal in five games. He added an empty-netter with 9.3 seconds left for his third two-goal game of the season.

Buffalo built a 2-0 lead in the first 13 minutes. Ennis beat Lehtonen 19 seconds into the game, and McCabe got his first of the season with 7:26 left in the first.

Faksa scored to make it 2-1 with 4:46 remaining in the first period.

Lightning 2, Kings 1 — Brian Boyle scored the go-ahead goal late in the second period and Tampa Bay opened a six-game road trip with a victory in Los Angeles.

Ben Bishop made 31 saves for the win, while Peter Budaj stopped 27 shots in a losing effort.

Both teams played without stars due to illness. Kings captain Anze Kopitar missed his first game since Nov. 20, while Lightning defenseman Hedman missed his first game of the season despite participating in warmups.

Sharks 5, Jets 2 — Joel Ward scored a shorthanded goal and took a hard hit to assist on Timo Meier's goal as host San Jose beat Winnipeg.

Brent Burns and Chris Tierney also scored, and Joe Thornton added an empty-netter. Martin Jones made 26 saves for the win.

Josh Morrissey broke up the shutout with 2:36 to play, and Mark Scheifele scored in the last minute.

Michael Hutchinson had 27 saves in a losing effort.

Oilers 3, Coyotes 1 — Jujhar Khaira gave the Oilers the lead with his first career goal and host Edmonton beat Arizona for its third straight victory. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Leon Draisaitl also scored, and Cam Talbot had 20 saves.

Radim Vrbata scored for Arizona. Mike Smith made 24 saves.
