At 9, Wenham’s Jake Ryan Flynn is no stranger to the stage

Age: 9, “but I’ll be 10 in September. It’s a big one.’’

Hometown: Wenham

Think of: A mini Jason Bateman with the musical chops and fearless attitude of “Doogie Howser’’-era Neil Patrick Harris. After learning he had been cast in a Beautyrest commercial with a certain NFL star quarterback, Jake was totally unfazed, his mother, Mary, says. “We were freaking out that he was going to be working with Tom Brady, but Jake was totally cool about the whole thing.’’

What caught our eye: Jake, who’ll be entering fourth grade this fall at Plumfield Academy in Danvers, is currently playing Michael Banks in “Mary Poppins’’ at the North Shore Music Theatre, where he is becoming something of a fixture. He’s also appeared there in “Billy Elliot,’’ “Shrek,’’ and “A Christmas Carol’’ (twice).

Light bulb moment: “I know my mom’s light bulb moment was when I was 18 months old. She was giving me a bath and she was singing, and I matched the note! Then she started changing notes, and I kept in tune. She told my dad, ‘I think Jake is going to be a singer.’ ’’ Jake’s own light bulb moment came after his first few roles. “I was hooked on being onstage. It was very awesome.’’

Biggest thrill: “Meeting Kristin Chenoweth at the Boston Children’s Theatre gala was so cool. She took pictures of me and talked with me. She told me she noticed me right away. I’ll never forget that.’’

Biggest surprise: On opening night for “Mary Poppins,’’ Jake took a bow by himself at the end of the show. “I was so proud! I wasn’t scared, just a little nervous.’’

Inspired by: His parents and three younger brothers. His mom helps him run lines and takes him to all of his auditions, and his dad, Mike, a former Baltimore Ravens center, supports him in following his dreams.

Aspires to: “My goal is to be on Broadway, I love New York City. I want to be the Phantom in ‘The Phantom of the Opera.’ I think it’s a good role and I love his voice. I really love evil characters.’’

For good luck: “I have this green shirt that I wear to all my auditions. I got it when I was 5 or 6 and it still fits me! It’s like a magic shirt.’’

What people should know: “I really like Legos. I always build a Lego version of all the shows I do. I build the sets and the characters and everything. I also love to read. I have so many books. I like my ‘Mary Poppins’ book a lot. It’s the best.’’

Coming soon: Jake will be playing Young Cosmo in North Shore Music Theatre’s upcoming production of “Singin’ in the Rain’’ Aug. 16-Sept. 4. “Mary Poppins’’ continues through July 31.
