Recent bird sightings on Cape Cod (as of Dec. 15) as reported to the Massachusetts Audubon Society.
The mountain bluebird continued at Crane WMA in Falmouth. A flock of 40 snow geese was also seen and photographed as it flew over.
The Bell’s vireo was seen at Fort Hill in Eastham again, and the lark sparrow was seen. Other birds at Fort Hill included 7 greater yellowlegs, 2 great horned owls, 1 marsh wren, 1 yellow-breasted chat, and 1 fox sparrow.
The number and diversity of seabirds at Race Point continues to amaze birders, with highlights including 2,500 common eider, 60 great shearwaters, 3 sooty shearwater, 145 Manx shearwaters, 350 sanderlings, 150 dunlin, 2 pomarine jaeger, 1 dovekie, 18 common murres, 1 thick-billed murre, 500 razorbills, 300 black-legged kittiwakes, 12 Iceland gulls, 1 snowy owl, 1 Lapland longspur, and 130 snow buntings.
Sightings at Head of the Meadow in Truro included a very late Cory’s shearwater, 20 great shearwaters, a Manx shearwater, 3 common murres, 200 razorbills, 60 laughing gulls, 150 black-legged kittiwakes, and 200 Bonaparte’s gulls.
The Western kingbird at Salt Pond visitor’s center in Eastham was seen again and other sightings around the Cape included common raven and 2 cave swallows reported from Brewster, a Lincoln’s sparrow and an Eastern phoebe in Barnstable, a Nashville warbler, an orange-crowned warbler, and 2 house wrens in West Yarmouth, a snowy owl toward the Chatham end of Nauset Beach, 2 pine siskins at Wellfleet Bay sanctuary, and 550 razorbills and a common redpoll at High Head Beach.
