Pivotal players

These players have put their respective teams in position for success in the upcoming state tourney with their stellar, and unsung, contributions:

¦ Joe Brown, Plymouth South: The 5-foot-10 power forward supplies critical rebounding and defense, creating opportunities for scorers Ryan Morrisey and Pat Travers. The senior captain is the “heart and soul of our team,’’ said coach David Costa.

¦ Anthony Fernandes, Randolph: A combo guard, the senior scores (7 points per game), rebounds (4.5) and distributes (4.5 assists) to twin towers Christian Hon and Rodney Simon. “When you watch us play, you can see he has his hands in everything,’’ said coach Kalon Jenkins.

¦ Patrick Flynn, Hanover: A 6-foot-3, 260-pound center, the junior is a bully on the boards for the Patriot League/Fisher frontrunners. A lineman on the gridiron, he was the league MVP this past fall. “If he plays well, we play well,’’ coach Nick Hannigan said.

¦ Grant Reuter, Old Rochester: While teammate Matt Valles (14 points, 8 rebounds per game) is putting up the numbers, this 6-foot-6 junior center has been a game-changing sixth man in the Bulldogs’ pursuit of a second straight Division 3 title. “He’s kind of a lynchpin,’’ said coach Steve Carvalho.

¦ Richie Watson, Norwood: On a squad featuring 10 seniors , the junior guard steps in as the primary ball handler when point guard Chris Bell needs a blow. “He’s one of our most physically and mentally tough guys,’’ said coach Rich Cormier. “He’s really embraced his role.’’
