Nineteen cities and towns — including Cohasset, Norwell, Stoughton, Weymouth, and Whitman — are now officially “Green Communities’’ and will receive a total of $3.1 million for clean energy and energy efficiency projects.
“The Green Communities program demonstrates state and local governments can work together to save energy and taxpayers’ money, while making the Commonwealth a healthier place to live,’’ Governor Charlie Baker said in a press release.
Altogether, there are now 155 green communities in the state, and all have committed to reducing their municipal energy consumption by 20 percent over five years, according to the press release. To get a “green’’ designation, communities also must buy fuel-efficient vehicles for municipal use, adopt an energy-saving building code for new construction, allow alternative energy facilities in specific locations, and expedite their permitting.
The state Department of Energy Resources grants up to $10 million annually to the “green’’ communities. Money has been earmarked for the newly designated towns, which must now apply for approval to use the money for specific projects.
According to the state, Cohasset was awarded $141,460; Norwell, $146,520; Stoughton, $209,910; Weymouth, $277,635; and Whitman, $166,215.
