Hingham stuns Duxbury
By Samuel Evers

The 15th-ranked Hingham boys’ lacrosse team pulled off a feat that had not been accomplished “in a very long time,’’ according to 27-year coach John Todd.

Playing in cold, raw, and rainy conditions, the Harbormen handed perennial power Duxbury a 14-6 loss on Thursday afternoon.

And furthermore, Hingham registered the victory on the Dragons’ home field.

“This was a huge game for us. It’s a big step forward,’’ said Todd, whose 10-4 squad climbed into first place in the Patriot League standings.

“It’s something that is always on our list of goals. Duxbury is a team that has been on the top for a while, so it means a lot.’’

Hingham seized a 3-1 lead in the first quarter and maintained a 6-4 edge at halftime.

But after Duxbury (6-4) pulled within one early in the second half, Hingham shifted into a second gear, according to Todd, and started playing near perfect lacrosse.

At the end of the third quarter, Hingham had built an 11-5 cushion and was on its way to a decisive victory.

Senior Jake Brodie, who is headed to the Air Force Academy, paced the attack with five goals. Fellow senior Will Kellem came up with big save after big save in the game-deciding third quarter.

“Those two really set the tone in that second half,’’ Todd said. “But beyond them, this was a team effort. Everyone did their job, everyone made the right plays and all the goal scorers put themselves in position to score.’’
