SATURDAY’S WEATHER: Another advertisement to move to Florida. It was sunny and 73 degrees.
MEDICAL REPORT: Koji Uehara (illness) did not take the field but did work out inside. Lefthanded reliever Edwin Escobar (flu) missed another workout and isn’t expected back for at least a few days.
FUNDAMENTALLY SPEAKING: The Red Sox have one station that doesn’t involve any activity. For 12 minutes, the pitchers meet with Triple A pitching coach Bob Kipper and former Sox catcher Jason Varitek to discuss strategies for controlling the running game. Most stolen bases are off the pitcher, not the catcher.
THUMBS UP: Here’s to longtime minor league coach and administrator Glenn “Goose’’ Gregson. The 66-year-old runs the “3-1 play’’ drill and shouts encouragement throughout as he slaps grounders to the right side and the pitchers cover first. Gregson makes up nicknames as he goes along and even the most jaded veteran seems to hustle a little more for him.
THUMBS DOWN: Hanley Ramirez was one of several position players who skipped their optional workout. But he is the only one of the group who is changing positions and obviously could use the work. If manager John Farrell was disappointed, he hid it well. “He’s had work all winter, going through that,’’ Farrell said. “He had a couple of days of work here. Guys who come in at this point, it’s on a voluntary basis right now. He’s going to get a lot of work in camp at first base.’’
AROUND THE BASES: For the first time since he arrived at camp, Travis Shaw worked out at first base. Until Saturday, he had been focusing on third base . . . Farrell and the coaching staff carefully watched non-roster reliever Carlos Marmol, who is working on a new delivery. The former All-Star had good velocity in his first bullpen session.
SCHEDULE: The Red Sox will be on the field to stretch at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
