HUDSON — Barnstable played to its strengths and again came out as the victors in the South sectionals.

It was no easy day for the Barnstable coach Duncan Chase, who knew going into the last event that a .075 lead could evaporate quickly.

However Chase felt, “very confident’’ with his seniors — Leksana Andrews and Tali Twomey — going into the floor event. They did not disappoint, as Andrews finished with a 9.450 (tied for first) and Twomey a 9.400 (tied for third) to lift Barnstable to the title with a score of 147.450.

“This is one of the best senior groups I have ever had,’’ said Chase, who now has 15 sectional titles.

Shrewsbury finished second at 145.40 with Medway third (144.60) and Bridgewater-Raynham fourth (142.075).

Daniel Bracato of Medway/Holliston/Millis finished first in the all-around with a 37.800. She also got first on the bars with 9.525 and first on the vaults with 9.750. Algonquin’s Kerry Luiso was second with 37.625 and Shrewsbury’s Madeline Konz was third with 37.550.

Barnstable will go for its 12th state gymnastics championship next Saturday at Algonquin.

North sectional — Despite all of the success the Central Catholic team has encountered this season, the championship meet was a day of firsts.

After posting an undefeated regular season and a victory in the Merrimack Valley Conference meet, the Raiders won the title for the first time in school history with a score of 141.750.

Central Catholic finished sixth in last year’s sectional meet. According to coach Heather Fusco, the difference this year a healthy and well-paced team.

“We had a great team last year but we took too many bumps by the end of the regular season,’’ Fusco said. “This year, we kind of took it slow and paced ourselves. We did what we had to do to get here and we came through strong.’’

The Raiders earned the top score in three of the meet’s four events, scoring 37.025 points on the vault, 33.050 points on the uneven bars, and 36.325 points on the floor exercise. Their 35.350 score on the balance beam was third behind Winchester (36.250) and Reading (35.625).

“The best part of today was when were just in the back room of the gym jamming out to music and warming up,’’ said Central Catholic’s Alexis Buote, who competed in every event beside the bars. “It was the best feeling to just be comfortable and feel confident as a team. We knew we had a good shot at success today.’’

Beverly finished second overall with 136.975 points. Winchester was a close third with 136.525 points and Andover rounded out the teams qualifying for the state meet with 136.450 points.

“We knew Beverly was close behind us, so we used that as motivation throughout the meet,’’ said Kayleigh Dugan, who competed in all four events for Central Catholic.

“This was our main goal this year, to come out and win this thing. It’s great to know that we worked to the best of our abilities, climbed all of the obstacles, made it here and got it done.’’

The MIAA state championship will take place on Feb. 27 at Algonquin. Central Catholic is focused on working out the kinks and maintaining the poise in the hopes of finishing strong.

“We just need to play it safe and keep it clean,’’ Fusco said. “I always say, ‘Clean and neat wins the meet.’ We just need to do that and hope for the best. The girls have their skills and they’re ready to go, they just need to hold on to their confidence.’’
