Many deaths feared in 5.7 earthquake

DAR ES SALAAM — At least 11 people died in one town in a 5.7-magnitude earthquake that shook the Lake Victoria region of Tanzania on Saturday, and the country’s president, John Magufuli, said many more were feared dead. Police said the 11 who died were in brick structures in the town of Bukoba, which was heavily damaged. The president’s office didn’t provide specific figures on casualties. The quake was felt as far as western Kenya and parts of Uganda and Rwanda. (AP)

Samsung declares phone not fit to use

SEOUL — Samsung Electronics on Saturday urged consumers to stop using Galaxy Note 7 smartphones immediately and exchange them as soon as possible, as more reports of the phones catching fire emerged even after the company’s global recall. The advisory from the South Korean company comes after US authorities urged consumers to switch the Galaxy Note 7 off and not to use or charge it during a flight. Several airlines around the world asked travelers not switch on the jumbo smartphone or put it in checked baggage, with some carriers banning the phone on flights. (AP)

Explosion kills 12 in packing factory

DHAKA — A boiler exploded and triggered a fire at a packaging factory near Bangladesh’s capital, leaving at least 12 people dead and 16 others injured Saturday. Several bodies were recovered from the five-story Tampaco Foils Ltd. factory in the Tongi industrial area outside Dhaka. Factory safety is a major concern in Bangladesh, which has thousands of garment and packaging factories that supply products to global clothing chains. In 2012, a fire at a garment factory killed 112 workers. (AP)
