The point guards got together.
Devin Galvin moved on from a record-setting career at Newburyport High – he set marks in career 3-point baskets (139) and has the top two single-season marks (62 as a junior; 57 as a senior) — to play the point for four years at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y.
A graduate of LaSalle Academy in Providence from Swansea, Mass., Caitlyn Charest was a four-year floor leader for the RPI women’s team.
Galvin and Charest were married in September, live in Washington, D.C., and play on the same coed basketball team.
“It’s a constant battle for the ball,’’ he said with a chuckle. “We both love to shoot.’’
Galvin helped the Newburyport boys bounce back from a tough season his sophomore year to a Cape Ann League title as a junior and a share of the championship in his senior season of 2004, when he was a team captain. A two-time CAL pick on the court, he also played three years of varsity baseball.
His highlights as a collegian included wins at Williams and Middlebury his junior season and a victory at Union as a senior.
“I don’t think we had won at Williams since 1992,’’ Galvin said. “They’re like the Goliath of Division 3 or at least one of them. That was a big win. So was beating Union at Union. They’re RPI’s biggest rival and a real good team.’’
Galvin started every game his junior year and the majority of the games his final season.
“In college especially, basketball was hard work,’’ he said. “It was almost like having a job during college. It was a ton of hours along with classes at an engineering school like RPI. The academics are pretty tough there. It made me appreciate hard work. As far as high school, some of my greatest memories of life are of the relationships you build with teammates. The competitiveness really brings out what I felt was the best of myself and my teammates.’’
The 30-year-old Galvin, who earned a degree in electronic media, arts and communication, is a senior user experience software designer at McDermott, Will & Emery in Washington.
As his LinkedIn profile notes, Galvin is “Living in Washington, D.C., but will always call Boston home.’’
“I’m a hardline Boston sports fan,’’ he said. “Celtics, Sox and Patriots mostly. It depends on the season. It’s Patriots right now. As soon as they get healthy, I think things are going to click. (Julian) Edelman is the key to the offense. He gets those third downs and loves the underneath routes. And with (Devin) McCourty and (Patrick) Chung being out, it shows how valuable they are.’’
