Talk about your tough acts to follow: A stage adaptation of “Cheers,’’ the Boston-based NBC sitcom that ranks as one of the greatest TV comedies of all time, will launch a national tour at the Citi Shubert Theatre this fall. The stage version will be set in the neighborhood bar where, famously, everybody knows your name. It will incorporate the first meeting between former Red Sox pitcher-turned-bar owner Sam Malone and pretentiously intellectual waitress Diane Chambers, as well as their frequent battles and the eventual romance between the lothario and the egghead. The Boston engagement of “Cheers Live On Stage’’ is slated for Sept. 9-18 at the Shubert, followed by a multi-week run at the Broadway Playhouse in Chicago and then a tour across the country. Casting for the roles of Sam, Diane, Norm (or, rather, Norm!), Cliff, Carla, and Coach will be announced at a later date, according to a statement by the producers. This won’t be the first time Boston audiences have seen a stage adaptation of a beloved sitcom: “I Love Lucy Live on Stage’’ was presented at the Colonial Theatre in 2013. A production by Stageworks Media and Troika Entertainment, “Cheers Live On Stage’’ will be presented in Boston by Citi Performing Arts Center and by John Tobin Presents, a live comedy production company owned by former Boston city councilor John Tobin. Tickets will go on sale May 15.
