Bookstore campaign welcomes YA fans

Trident Booksellers and Cafe has long been a bastion for bookworms, hipsters, and bookworm hipsters.

But now it wants to become something more: a destination for young adult literature. The store is launching more YA programs, starting with a young adult trivia night on Thursday. The kick-off event will be the first of Trident’s YA Passport Series, a campaign that will culminate with a block party in June.

“The idea is to see the world of young adult [literature] in 2017 here at Trident,’’ said events coordinator Mackenzie Van Engelenhoven. “The YA market is so strong and it’s a great community here in Boston. We want to tap into it a lot more.’’

Participants in the Passport Series will get a stamp for every young adult event they attend; each one counts as an entry into prize drawings at the June block party. Van Engelenhoven hopes it can peel readers away from their laptop screens and into Trident, and also give the store a slice of the big money that comes from young adult book sales.

“The [young adult] community is very, very vibrant online. It’s fantastic, but it means it takes some creativity to give them incentive to come in. The passport was invented to incentivize people to actually come to our store,’’ she said. “We’d love to be a destination for the young adult [scene]. We’re the only independent bookstore in Boston. We have such a unique space, and I would love to see what we can do.’’
