Danvers resident Mark Palladino (@markpalladino) certainly keeps busy. At 24, the Woburn native divides his time between studying social work at Salem State University, working with older adults affected by Alzheimer’s and dementia at an assisted living facility in Billerica, and hand-crafting candles as the co-owner of East Coast Candle Company. But in his precious spare moments, there’s nothing Palladino loves more than cultivating an Instagram awash in eye-catching images.
Q. Your photography employs a lot of grays and whites. Why are you drawn to those hues?
A. I feel like lighter colors are very pleasing to the eye and have always drawn me in. I get very excited when I’m going somewhere to take photos and it’s overcast. I often use people as the subject of my photos, and the grays and whites that I set out to find really help make that subject matter stand out.
Q. Is there a certain philosophy to your photography, something you shoot for or are guided by in taking photos?
A. I wouldn’t say there is much philosophy to my photography. I really love capturing moments with emotion, and I feel like having a person in a photograph helps me accomplish that. Oftentimes, an idea will pop into my head of a specific image I want to capture, and when that happens, it is really fun trying to go out there and grab it.
Q. Looking at your feed, you frequently work with models. Who do you go to when searching for a subject?
A. People are definitely my favorite to photograph. I love when friends are willing to let me photograph them — but I also really enjoy just taking photographs of strangers. Each photograph I take that has someone in it, it creates this sense of emotion that I’m always looking for.
Q. How long have you been on Instagram?
A. Almost four years. It started out as just a fun way to share just about anything and everything from my life. If you go back far enough, you can find some awesome selfies, and pictures of burritos. Around two years ago is when I got back into photography and realized how fantastic the Instagram community is. I love that I can just take out my phone, capture a moment, and share it to the world. . . . I’ve kept up with Instagram mostly because of the community that comes from it. I love how many passionate and talented people I have followed and have met through the app.
Q. How do you find the time to work Instagram into your busy schedule?
A. With going to school full-time and working full-time, photography is something I truly love to do and, right now, it’s a fantastic hobby. My fiancée and I make it a point to go explore somewhere new each weekend. Photography has helped us find so many beautiful places located right here in New England. It is something I look forward to day in and day out.
Q. Any advice for budding photographers?
A. Get out there. There are places all around that are to be seen and explored. Whether it is a road trip with your friends or somewhere right down the street, just go out and shoot.
