Tips

¦ Attempt this only with a contractor you trust.

¦ If possible, have someone you know check on the property and the work from time to time.

¦ If you’re worried about keys floating around among subcontractors and others, have your locks changed when the work is completed.

¦ Lock up anything of monetary or sentimental value in a safe or an out-of-the-way closet.

¦ Get everything in writing, and make sure your contractor is bonded and insured.

¦ Take “before’’ pictures: You’ll enjoy comparing what was and what is — and they can be helpful if you have to file an insurance claim.
