SCORE: Red Sox 4, Mets 1.
RECORD: 10-13.
BREAKDOWN: The split-squad Mets scored a run on three singles in the fifth, but the Sox took the lead with two in the sixth. Xander Bogaerts tied it with a sac fly, then David Ortiz stroked an RBI single. Bogaerts hit his first home of the spring, a solo shot in the eighth, to make it 3-1. Sox relievers Craig Kimbrel and Roenis Elias retired all six batters they faced in the eighth and ninth, five on strikeouts.
THUMBS UP: Joe Kelly mowed down a procession of Met B-listers. Kelly worked seven innings, giving up five hits, a walk, and one run. He fanned six, throwing 75 pitches, 49 for strikes. The greatest threat to Kelly came when he tried to barehand a comebacker and the ball grazed off his throwing hand for a single. Kelly also nonchalantly snared a wicked liner hit by Mets second baseman Dilson Herrera . . . Former Boston College standout Eric Campbell played first for the Mets and singled to right-center in the fifth. Campbell caught the Sox napping by stealing second, and eventually came around to score the first run of the game . . . Center fielder Jackie Bradley Jr. made a nice throw to nail a Met trying to stretch a single in the seventh . . . Sox employee Ken Nigro, a longtime member of the BBWAA, did a fine job as official scorer.
THUMBS DOWN: Moving quickly to his left, Bogaerts bounced a throw to first in the fifth inning that got by Hanley Ramirez easily. It would have been a tough play for the best first basemen, and it was clear Hanley had no shot . . . A fan carrying a “Where’s Bill Buckner?’’ sign walked through the grandstand before the game . . . Travis Shaw went 0 for 3 as his spring average plummeted to .419.
MEDICAL UPDATE: The big news in camp involved a disclosure that Pablo Sandoval suffered back tightness going to his backhand side in a game at Jupiter Tuesday. Sandoval came in for treatment Wedenesday, when the Sox were off, and again Thursday. Farrell said Sandoval will be unavailable for the next few days, but said it was not considered a disabled list situation for now . . . Koji Uehara has what Farrell calls “general soreness.’’ He has pitched in just two spring games and has a bullpen session scheduled for Friday.
AROUND THE BASES: There was a scary moment at the end of the sixth inning when Ramirez struck out and lost control of his bat, flinging it into the box seats behind the third base dugout. No one was seriously hurt . . . Former Mets general manager Steve Phillips, now with the MLB Network, was in the Sox clubhouse conducting interviews. Too bad he didn’t interview Sox first base coach Ruben Amaro, former GM of the Phillies. Would have been an excellent photo op . . . Sox/Globe owner John Henry and his wife, Linda Pizzuti, attened the game at JetBlue Park . . . New York City’s mayor, Bill de Blasio, visited the Sox clubhouse after the game.
NEXT GAME: The Sox face the Pirates at JetBlue Park on Friday at 6:05 p.m. The game will air on NESN and WEEI-FM (93.7). David Price will start for the Sox, followed by Matt Barnes, Noe Ramirez, Robbie Ross Jr., Carolos Marmol, and Anthony Varvaro. Ryan Vogelsong, Arquimedes Caminero, and Neftali Feliz will pitch for the Pirates.
