Thank you for vacationing with your extended family! Please take a few moments to complete this satisfaction survey so we can make next year’s week of togetherness even better (admittedly a low bar)!
1. Based on your recent experience, how likely is it that you would recommend the _____ Family Vacation to a relative?
If you answered “Not at all likely’’ is it because:
a) Your sister claimed the master bedroom — with the ensuite bath and sunset views — even though she had the best bedroom last year, too, and, while we’re on the subject, the nicest room growing up?
b) You were the only person who seemed to care that everyone was tracking sand inside?
c) Uncle ____’s daily monologues about “crooked Hillary’’ got to you.
2. Please think about your older brother, and the extreme diet he’s following this year. Which was more annoying:
a) That he left his dirty juicer in the sink until someone else weakened and washed it?
b) His smug belittling of your food choices?
If a and b, were you the person who spite-ate all the kale?
3. Speaking of food, did you notice that, despite the fact that you never went to the grocery store, the refrigerator and the bar remained well-stocked?
If yes, which reason best captures the rationalization you used to make yourself feel OK about it?
a) If they want to waste money on artisanal mayonnaise, fair-trade coffee and craft beer, fine, but I’m not reimbursing them.
b) My life right now is harder than everyone else’s so it’s OK.
c) I was planning to get dinner at the end of the week but then I forgot my wallet.
If no, and you maintain that you did not notice that the fridge is always magically filled, how do you manage to eat at home?
4. Regarding the tension surrounding the choice of a restaurant for our last night together until next summer (or perhaps our last night together forever, lol) . . .
Did you think ____ was right to veto Fish ’n Fusilli because it only had 3 stars on Yelp — even though the hostess said she could seat all 18 of us; the food looked delicious; and two children and several couples were melting down?
a) No. We didn’t end up eating until 10:45 p.m. at home, I’ll add, which meant last-minute grocery shopping and kitchen clean-up for those who don’t want to attract ants or mice.
b) Yes. I don’t think it’s smart to do anything that hasn’t been crowdsourced.
5. In general, without pointing fingers at any one nuclear family, do you think it’s appropriate to come on a multi-generational, multi-family trip and then only do things with your spouse/children, leaving everyone else out?
6. Conversely, is it your belief that on a good family vacation, every activity must be done by every single person, and that the group must travel as one?
If you answered yes, should the activities be dictated by:
a) Small children with rigid nap schedules who can’t behave in restaurants and whine when asked to walk more than a block or two?
b) The relative determined to check items off his bucket list?
c) The foodie?
7. Just out of curiosity, do you think it’s fair for someone who didn’t help plan the trip, even though he was included on every e-mail thread, to spend the entire vacation complaining about the house and the location?
If that person was overheard using the word “obli-cation’’ to describe the trip, should he be included next year?
8. Speaking of fairness, as a guiding principle, is it ethical for parents of young children to rise early and sneak out for coffee, alone, for an undetermined amount of time, and not answer calls, texts, or FB messages as to their whereabouts or plans for return?
9. Please indicate the primary reason you came on this vacation.
a) Basically forced by spouse.
b) I would have felt so guilty if I didn’t go that I figured that, on balance, it was actually easier to come.
c) I was the one who planned it, even though I didn’t want to go.
d) All of the above.
10. Which answer best describes how you like to spend your time on vacation?
a) I want to set my agenda ahead of time and then stick to the schedule to make sure I pack everything in.
b) I enjoy posting candid family photos on Instagram and Facebook!
c) My favorite way to pass time is to do absolutely nothing. Even if I’m in a gorgeous place or new city I like to sleep late and then hang around the hotel/house.
d) I like to question people and then advise them on changes they could make to improve their lives.
If you answered a, b, c or d, we’ll look forward to seeing you again next year!
