Winter Warrior
Insulated wool hats provide warmth and whimsy
Milliner Marie Galvin takes winter seriously, with an infusion of fun. Inspired by flight helmets from the 1930s and Mongolian nomads, Galvin has been creating this signature style, with slight variations, since 1999, and it’s no small feat. Each of the three layers is hand-cut, sewn, and blocked in her SoWa studio, and topped with an oversize pompom that uses up to two skeins of wool and takes two people half a day to make. “Think Edward Scissorhands trimming a topiary,’’ she says, “with yarn flying everywhere!’’ Pompom hat, $295 at GALVIN-ized Headwear, 450 Harrison Ave., Studio #67, Boston, www.galvinized-hats.com
