Drew Smyly pitched 5⅔ innings to remain unbeaten at Rogers Centre, Alexei Ramirez and Steven Souza Jr. hit home runs and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the host Toronto Blue Jays, 6-2, Tuesday night.

The Blue Jays are tied with Baltimore for the first AL wild-card spot. They have lost seven of their last 11 games against the Rays.

Ramirez hit a three-run homer off Marcus Stroman (9-8) in the fifth, and Souza drilled a solo shot off Joe Biagini in the seventh.

Russell Martin had a two-run shot, but Toronto lost for the eighth time in 11 September games.

Smyly (7-11) came in 3-0 with a 1.23 ERA at Rogers Centre in five appearances, including three starts. He allowed two runs and five hits.

Ramirez’s home run was his first since signing with Tampa Bay after being released by San Diego earlier this month.

Toronto loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh, but Edwin Encarnacion struck out against Danny Farquhar.

The Blue Jays were without reigning AL MVP Josh Donaldson for the second straight game. Donaldson is day to day with a sore right hip.

White Sox 8, Indians 1 — Todd Frazier and Carlos Sanchez each drove in two runs in a seven-run sixth inning as Chicago handed division-leading Cleveland its second straight lopsided loss.

The White Sox had seven hits, drew two walks, and sent 12 batters to the plate against three pitchers in their highest-scoring inning of the season.

The Indians maintained a six-game lead over Detroit in the AL Central after the Tigers lost.

Jose Quintana (12-10) held Cleveland to five hits over eight innings, including Brandon Guyer’s solo homer in the second in Chicago’s fifth win in seven games.

Tied at 1, Trevor Bauer (11-7) walked Adam Eaton to lead off the sixth. Four hits followed, with Jose Abreu driving in the first run and Frazier getting his career-high 92nd RBI to chase Bauer.

Avisail Garcia then delivered an RBI single, Sanchez tripled and Eaton doubled in a run in his second time up to end Dan Otero’s night.

Yankees 3, Dodgers 0 — Jacoby Ellsbury and Didi Gregorius came off the bench and hit back-to-back homers off Ross Stripling (7-4) in the seventh inning, propelling host New York past Los Angeles.

Gary Sanchez added a leadoff home run in the eighth, CC Sabathia pitched three-hit ball for 6⅓ innings and the Yankees won for the eighth time in 10 games.

New York began the night two games behind Baltimore for the second AL wild card.

Prized rookie Julio Urias was pulled in the fourth by the Dodgers, who had won seven of nine before their latest offensive flop against left-handed pitching.

Adam Warren (3-1) retired both batters he faced, and Dellin Betances got four outs for his 11th save.

Athletics 5, Royals 4 Pinch-hitter Yonder Alonso delivered a two-run double in the eighth and Oakland rallied past host Kansas City.

The defending World Series champion Royals dropped five games out of the wild-card race.

Joakim Soria blew his seventh save chance in eight opportunities. He was summoned with two outs in the eighth and the Royals clinging to a 3-2 lead lead.

On his second pitch, Soria gave up a double to Alonso over the head of center fielder Jarrod Dyson, scoring Brett Eibner and pinch runner Joey Wendle. Soria then yielded an RBI single to Marcus Semien.

Rookie Matthew Strahm (2-1), who gave up an infield single to Chad Pinder before Soria replaced him, took the loss.

John Axford (6-4) pitched one inning. Ryan Madson balked home Dyson with two outs in the ninth before closing for his 30th save in 36 tries.

Twins 8, Tigers 1 — Jorge Polanco homered and drove in four runs and0 Brian Dozier added three more hits to his torrid second half as Minnesota beat host Detroit.

The Tigers lost for the third time in 14 games against Minnesota, costing them precious ground in a crowded race for the second AL wild card.

Kennys Vargas homered for the Twins, and Robbie Grossman drove in two runs.

Kyle Gibson (6-9) dominated, allowing one run and five hits in eight innings. The win ended a four-start winless streak, including when Gibson allowed five runs in five innings to Detroit on Aug. 23.

Matt Boyd (5-4) took the loss in his worst outing since June. He gave up seven runs, eight hits and a walk in 3 2/3 innings.

Mets 4, Nationals 3 — T.J. Rivera had three RBIs and homered off closer Mark Melancon (2-2) in the top of the 10th inning to lead New York to victory over Washington.

The Mets pulled within nine games of Washington in the NL East and retained their hold on the second NL wild-card spot. New York has won eight of its last 10 and is 17-6 since Aug. 20, gaining 3½ games on Washington in that stretch.

Rivera, who had three RBIs, drilled an 0-2 pitch with one out in the 10th into the left field seats off Nationals closer Mark Melancon (2-2). The loss snapped Washington’s four-game winning streak.

Jeurys Familia (3-3) earned the victory despite surrendering two runs in the ninth to blow his fourth save of the season. Left-hander Jerry Blevins struck out Daniel Murphy for the final out to earn his first save.

Marlins 7, Braves 5 — Ichiro Suzuki scored two runs and drove in another in the 900th multi-hit game of 42-year-old’s career as visiting Miami boosted its fading wild-card hopes.

Miami, which began the night five games out of a playoff spot, won for only the fifth time in its last 17 games.

With the Marlins trailing 2-0, Suzuki ripped a single to right in the third to bring home a run. Christian Yelich followed with a two-run double to the gap in right-center.

Suzuki sparked another three-run outburst off Matt Wisler (6-12) in the fifth, hardly looking his age as he sped around the bases for a leadoff triple.

Freddie Freeman and Matt Kemp homered for the Braves.

Justin Nicolino (3-6) claimed the win with two hitless innings of relief. A.J. Ramos earned his 35th save.

Rangers 3, Astros 2 — Jurickson Profar hit a tiebreaking RBI single in the ninth, and Texas handed host Houston another difficult loss.

Rougned Odor helped set up Profar’s clutch swing when he reached on a wild pitch after striking out with one out. He swiped second and scored on Elvis Andrus’ two-out triple against Ken Giles (2-4).

Reds 6, Brewers 4 — Joey Votto homered and drove in two runs, Dan Straily pitched a career-high eight innings and host Cincinnati took advantage of some sloppy Milwaukee fielding to win its fifth straight.

Cardinals 4, Cubs 2 — Brandon Moss broke out of a lengthy slump with a tie-breaking home run and Aledmys Diaz connected in his return to the starting lineup, leading host St. Louis over Chicago.

The Cardinals ensured that the Cubs won’t clinch the NL Central at Busch Stadium. Chicago’s magic number is three, and the series in St. Louis wraps up Thursday.

Pirates 5, Phillies 3 — Sean Rodriguez had a pinch-hit three-run homer in the ninth inning, lifting Pittsburgh over host Philadelphia.

The Pirates remained six games behind the Mets for the second NL wild card.
