Walsh signs podcast proclamation

If this isn’t a hoax, Boston Mayor Marty Walsh hasissued what very well could be the strangest proclamation the city has ever seen. Friday morning the following odd post appeared in Walsh’s Twitter feed: “I am declaring Sunday Judge John @hodgman day in the City of Boston, in honor of this champion of podcast justice.’’ (It turns out Hodgman is not an actual judge, but a comedic actor from Brookline whom you may recognize from “The Daily Show.’’)

Walsh’s tweet was accompanied by an image of an official-looking proclamation that says: “Whereas: Judge John Hodgman has overcome his disadvantaged background of having absolutely no legal training to become the nation’s most popular champion of PODCAST JUSTICE; AND Whereas: John Hodgman, the actor who plays Judge John Hodgman, is from Boston, or at least he will be when we finally execute our plan to annex Brookline. . .’’

The proclamation goes on to say that Hodgman consulted with Walsh on such controversies as “what objects constitute acceptable space savers in a snow storm, whether Tony’s or the Clam Box have the best fried clams on Quincy Shore Drive, and whether Ho Chi Minh’s silhouette is actually visible in the Rainbow Gas Tank.’’ Even the mayor’s salutation on the proclamation is pretty hilarious; above his signature Walsh states: “I urge all of you, my fellow Bostonians to join me in wondering what life choices you made that led you to this moment.’’ And indeed we are, as we scratch our heads wondering what this all means. We’re not sure, but we’ve contacted City Hall and we’re waiting for a response.

One thing we do know — it’s a very clever plug for Hodgman’s podcast, and his show at the Wilbur Theatre Sunday evening.
