The Norwell girls’ cross country team won its 139th consecutive dual meet in the South Shore League, earning a 15-48 victory over Abington on Wednesday afternoon.
Fifty miles north, Hamilton-Wenham kept its streak alive, beating Newburyport, 21-37, for its 134th straight Cape Ann League win.
The Generals thought they had beaten the national record last week, but further research proved them to still be behind a few active unbeaten streaks — including Norwell, New York’s Pearl River (212) and Pennsylvania’s York Suburban (142).
Hamilton-Wenham’s streak dates to 2004.
“It’s really a compliment to all the runners and parents over the years that have made sacrifices and commitments to the team,’’ longtime coach Hamilton-Wenham coach Steve Sawyer said. “That’s what is most important to me.’’
The Generals dominated on Wednesday, with six girls finishing in the top 10 in the 5K race at Patton Park: Olivia Horgan (19:54), Grace Moroney (20:09), Anna Cassidento (20:33), Rebecca Erhard (20:54), Annabelle Howley (20:59), and Jemma Shea (20:59).
The Clippers, meanwhile, haven’t lost a dual meet since 1996.
“I personally don’t like the streaks,’’ said 23-year coach Chuck Martin. “The number of years and how many players have come through this program over this time I think is what is more impressive to me.’’
Norwell girls took the first five places in the 3.04-mile course at Norwell Community Complex: Kelley Burtch (21:16), Liz Sheedy (21:16), Rachel Weimann (23:05), Abigail O’Connell (23:20), and MeiLin Mulvey (23:21).
