From the moment Marblehead senior Kylie Cronin finished the anchor leg of the winning 200-yard medley relay, the Magicians were in control — despite finishing nearly a full second slower than their seed time.

Sunday was a busy afternoon for Marblehead’s seven competitors at the MIAA Division 2 state girls’ swimming championships at Agganis Arena, who placed in the top three in nine events and top six in the other two.

As a result, Marblehead handily took home the state title, finishing with 271.5 points, lapping Weston (199), Longmeadow (188), and Duxbury (180).

“These girls said at the beginning of the season, ‘We’re gonna win states this year,’?’’ coach Susan Guertin said. “We don’t have a lot of depth; we just have really, really good swimmers.’’

Guertin said her team had only five swimmers qualify for individual events, as well as two divers. They won two of the meet’s three relays — the 200 medley to open the meet (1 minute 48.31 seconds), and the 400 freestyle to close it (3:34.81).

Marblehead was led by Cronin, who was a winner in the 50 freestyle (24.05) and the 100 butterfly (55.57) while also swimming as the anchor in each relay. The team also got first-place finishes from sophomore Meagan Hathaway (500 freestyle, 5:05.18) and junior Ellie Ronan (100 backstroke, 57.60).

Guertin stressed the importance of each of her swimmers performing as well as they did.

“We certainly didn’t have a lot of events with more than one swimmer in them,’’ she said. “I tried to spread everybody out. I wanted to cover all the events, and some people disagreed with that, but I don’t like to have [no swimmers] in an event.’’

Guertin also spoke of the closeness of her team as an influencing factor in her team’s success.

“They know each other backwards and forwards, and that’s part of it,’’ she said. “They’re such a close-knit group.’’

Other individual winners were Longmeadow’s Jerrica Li in the 100 free (52.71) and 200 free (1:50.95), Duxbury’s Mary Buckley in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.81), Cohasset’s Julia Klier in the 200 IM (2:05.83), and Sabrina Bunar of Lynnfield in diving (558.70).
