Red Sox spring training report

WEDNESDAY’S WEATHER: It was another sunny day at Fenway South, with a few wind gusts, as the temperature hit 81.

FUNDAMENTALLY SPEAKING: One of the drill stations for the pitchers doesn’t involve anything more than standing around in a circle and listening to Triple A pitching coach Bob Kipper discuss strategies for controlling the running game. The idea is to keep the pitchers cognizant of the need to hold runners and be quick to the plate.

PLAYER OF THE DAY: The nod goes to Dwight Evans. The 65-year-old Red Sox legend is in camp helping out as a coach. As the position players took batting practice, he took care of collecting baseballs in a bucket and lugging them to the mound when more were needed. Good hustle by Dewey.

AROUND THE BASES: With shortstop Xander Bogaerts reporting to camp, he and second baseman Dustin Pedroia worked out together on the infield for the first time. It was a brief session . . . Brandon Workman, who is coming back from Tommy John surgery, pitched in the bullpen and was pleased with the results . . . Only a few hundreds fans watched the workout. A large crowd is expected for the first full-squad practice Friday.

MEDICAL REPORT: Eduardo Rodriguez threw off a mound for the first time since twisting his right knee Dec. 27. It wasn’t at full effort but he got through the session without any issues. “A step in the right direction,’’ manager John Farrell said.

SCHEDULE: The pitchers will get going at 10 a.m. Thursday.
