To say that the sisterly duo Chloe x Halle have had a whirlwind year is a bit of an understatement. The Atlanta-born pair of 18-year-old Chloe Bailey and 16-year-old Halle Bailey have toured Europe with their mentor Beyoncé and appeared in her film “Lemonade.’’ They’ve appeared alongside first lady Michelle Obama at the South by Southwest conference in Austin, Texas, and at the White House Easter Egg Roll. They snagged a slot on the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. And they released their debut EP “Sugar Symphony,’’ which showcases their forward-thinking, cerebral version of R&B.
Chloe x Halle’s rise to the forefront of soul began early; the two fell in love with music at an early age.
“When I was a little girl, I went to my first concert, and it featured Missy Elliott, Alicia Keys, and Beyoncé,’’ recalls Chloe. “I remember seeing all of this incredible action on that stage — it was an ‘aha’ moment. I remember having my small binoculars, because we had nosebleed seats, and just seeing [the artists].’’
“I realized that I really wanted to sing when I discovered Billie Holiday,’’ Halle says. “There was a library across the street from our house in Atlanta that would let you borrow CDs. I remember being a young girl walking into the library, and seeing a pink CD [the Billie Holiday compilation ‘Lady Day’]. I think I was 5. It had this beautiful woman on it with flowers in her hair who was just so awesome, so I took it home and listened to it. She changed my life from there.’’
The pair’s trip into the spotlight began, as so many do these days, on YouTube. On their channel, which launched when Chloe was 13 and Halle was 11, they covered songs that represented their wide range of influences — Lorde’s “Royals,’’ Lil Wayne’s “How to Love,’’ Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep.’’ In 2013 they posted their take on “Pretty Hurts,’’ the broadside against beauty standards from Beyoncé’s self-titled album. Their intricate vocal interplay and matter-of-fact charisma led to the clip becoming a viral sensation — helped in no small amount by Beyoncé posting the clip on her Facebook page. In 2015, the pop mogul signed them to her management company, Parkwood Entertainment.
In April, Beyoncé released her sprawling film/album “Lemonade,’’ and Chloe x Halle appeared in the striking black-and-white clip for the fiery “Freedom.’’ Less than a week later, “Sugar Symphony’’ debuted. “Drop,’’ the EP’s first single, has a hypnotic feel, the two girls’ voices swirling above a foreboding tableau of snaps and thudding basslines. Its dreamy hookiness is a bit ironic, given that it was inspired by the sisters’ inability to dislodge certain songs from their heads.
“There are always songs that we hear and that we love so much, but we play them too much, and they’ll get old and boring,’’ says Chloe. “But we still can’t get them out of our heads. That’s what my sister and I wrote ‘Drop’ about. A lot of people think we’re writing about a love interest, but it’s really about a song.’’
The other tracks on the Chloe x Halle-produced “Sugar Symphony’’ — the whirling “Lazy Love,’’ the stark “Fall’’ — take the building blocks of soul music that have been scattered throughout the ages and assemble them into structures with lots of breathing room, allowing for space where the sisters’ voices intertwine and break apart. It’s a statement that bodes well for Chloe x Halle’s first album, which the duo is working on while on the road.
“We’re always about energy,’’ says Chloe, and that attitude extends toward Chloe x Halle’s live performances as well.
“We just want people to feel great and really vibe with the music,’’ Chloe says. “We love performing live, because we see the people’s [reactions] and actually connect with them and really feel the music with them. Performing onstage is always so freeing to us.’’
“We just enjoy going around and seeing new people and meeting new faces,’’ says Halle. “It’s really been something that we love. We think it’s so cool when people are dancing to our music — that’s just such a wonderful sight to see. We’re so grateful.’’
