Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman pitched out of his own bases-loaded, no-out jam in the ninth inning, helped by a slick double play, and the New York Yankees held off the Tigers, 5-4, Thursday night in Detroit.
After scoring against relievers Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller, Detroit was down, 5-3, going into the ninth. The Tigers quickly loaded the bases against Chapman on a single, a walk, and a bunt single.
The Yankees chose to pitch to Tigers star Miguel Cabrera, and Chapman retired him on a routine grounder for his eighth save.
Shortstop Didi Gregorius then scampered up the middle to field a hard grounder by J.D. Martinez and made a glove flip to second baseman Starlin Castro, who caught the ball with his bare hand and let go a strong, off-balance relay. A run scored on the play, with the potential tying run moving to third.
Jacoby Ellsbury drove in three runs for the Yankees in a makeup game from a rainout on April 10. New York had lost three straight.
Marlins 4, Pirates 3 — Christian Yelich hit a walkoff double in the 12th inning for Miami.
Giants 6, Braves 0 — Madison Bumgarner won his sixth straight decision to match a career best and hit a two-run homer in a six-run fifth inning, leading San Francisco over host Atlanta.
Bumgarner (7-2) allowed four hits in 7? innings, struck out 11, and walked two, lowering his ERA to 1.91.
The NL West-leading Giants have won 17 of their last 21 games and are unbeaten in Bumgarner’s last eight starts.
Diamondbacks 3, Astros 0 — Zack Greinke struck out a season-high 11, and visiting Arizona used a three-run seventh inning to defeat Houston and Dallas Keuchel in a matchup of former AL Cy Young Award winners.
Greinke (7-3), the 2009 winner with Kansas City, allowed a season-low four hits — all singles — over seven innings and walked none. He won his fourth straight start and stopped Arizona’s three-game skid.
Cubs 7, Dodgers 2 — Kyle Hendricks dominated over eight innings and host Chicago backed him with four home runs, beating Los Angeles for its eighth win in nine games.
Javier Baez, Jason Heyward, and Kris Bryant connected against 19-year-old Julio Urias (0-1).
Anthony Rizzo hit a leadoff homer against J.P. Howell in the eighth as the major league-leading Cubs took three of four from the Dodgers.
Hendricks (4-4) allowed two runs and three hits, struck out six, and walked one. Urias was simply overpowered in his second career start.
The Cubs gave Hendricks all the support he needed after managing just four hits over the previous two games.
Indians 5, Royals 4 — Mike Napoli’s sacrifice fly scored Francisco Lindor with the winning run to cap a two-run ninth inning, and host Cleveland stopped Kansas City’s six-game winning streak.
Brewers 4, Phillies 1 — Chris Carter and Jonathan Villar homered, Chase Anderson pitched effectively into the sixth inning, and visiting Milwaukee beat Philadelphia.
Twins 6, Rays 4 — Eduardo Nunez led off with an inside-the-park home run in helping Minnesota push aside visiting Tampa Bay.
Reds 11, Rockies 4 — Eugenio Suarez homered twice in a game for the first time in his career, Alfredo Simon pitched seven effective innings for his first win in nearly a month, and visiting Cincinnati routed Colorado.
