City’s broadband foundation solid, strong

In response to the editorial “Build a fiber network in Boston’’ (Feb. 14), I offer a more comprehensive understanding of the current broadband foundation in Boston, which powers thousands of businesses and hundreds of thousands of consumers.

The broadband market is robust. Commercial customers of all sizes have no fewer than 15 providers actively competing for their business. Comcast has invested billions building a fiber backbone using the industry’s most advanced fiber technologies to position us well to compete. Our Greater Boston network is backed by a highly trained, dedicated workforce of nearly 5,000 technicians, engineers, customer care representatives, and others who work 24/7 to ensure its reliable operation.

Fiber-based connections are not limited to Boston business customers. Comcast owns and operates one of the most extensive fiber-based networks in the country. We provide a fiber-to-the-home solution that delivers multi-gig speeds to some residential customers in Boston. Further, XFINITY Advanced Communities Network is a fiber-based infrastructure for property owners to deploy “move-in-ready’’ gigabit-capable solutions. Unlike some new gigabit products, which require digging up streets or stringing new wires to deploy, the soon-to-be launched DOCSIS 3.1 uses existing lines to deliver gigabit service faster and to more people than ever.

Through Comcast’s continued investment in our network and our innovative products and services, Boston’s broadband foundation is anything but “rickety.’’ We contend that it is solid and strong and can support the city’s needs today and well into the future.
