A Norwell man is in custody after he allegedly set fire to his home Monday and then barricaded himself inside, refusing to cooperate with officials for more than five hours, according to Norwell police.

Ryan Palmer, 30, was arraigned Tuesday at Hingham District Court on charges of arson to a dwelling house, threatening to commit a crime, and malicious destruction of property, police and court officials said. He was ordered held without bail until Jan. 19.

The incident resulted in extensive fire and water damage to the home, Norwell Police Deputy Chief Carol Brzuszek said.

Police and fire fighters arrived at the home on Stetson Road in Norwell around 2:50 p.m. Monday following reports of a fire.

Palmer, who lived in the home, stayed in his attic and declined to come outside, police said. Authorities believe he tried to set fire to his own kitchen.

As a precaution, Metropolitan Law Enforcement Council officers and the State Police bomb squad were called to the area and neighbors were evacuated from their homes, according to police.

“Due to the volatile nature of this call, it was necessary to request additional resources for everyone’s safety including the suspect,’’ Brzuszek said.

At 8:15 p.m. — more than five hours after police arrived — Palmer was taken into custody, police said.

He was taken to South Shore Hospital for medical treatment before being taken to the police station.
