A man was flown to a Boston hospital Tuesday morning after a portion of a cinder block wall fell on top of him while he was working at a warehouse in Stoughton, fire officials said.

The 36-year-old construction worker was several feet in the air on a scissor lift around 7:39 a.m. when the slab of about 15 cinder blocks fell and struck him.

The worker was doing renovations at the warehouse, trying to take down the wall in small pieces, when the large slab toppled over, according to Stoughton Fire Captain Jackson Macomber.

He estimated the blocks, which were bound together with mortar, weigh hundreds of pounds.

When Stoughton fire officials arrived at the warehouse on Shuman Avenue, the lift had been lowered and the portion of wall removed. The man was conscious and lying on the lift at that time, but no further information was available on his condition.

“It’s a tragic accident, especially this time of year,’’ Macomber said.

The man was taken by helicopter to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. His condition was not released.

The US Occupational Safety & Health Administration is investigating the incident.
