Access requires watching periodic video advertisements

The Internet connection speed at Boston Logan International Airport is now faster.

Boingo Wireless Inc., which manages high-speed Internet service at nearly 60 airports worldwide, said Monday it has increased the Wi-Fi speed at seven US airports, including Logan.

Access to free Wi-Fi at Logan still requires travelers to engage in an activity such as watching a 30-second video advertisement every 45 minutes, Boingo said. There is no limit on the number of 45-minute Internet sessions. But the connection speed is now at a minimum of 5 megabits per second, Boingo said, which is fast enough to stream videos in HD quality.

The Los Angeles-based company did not disclose the previous connection speeds at Logan.

Boingo subscribers (plans start at $9.95 per month) can load content two or four times faster than the free Wi-Fi, at 10 Mbps or 20 Mbps, with bursts of up to 50 Mbps, the company said.

In comparison, average broadband connection speed in the United States is 12.6 megabits per second, according to Cambridge’s Akamai Technologies Inc.

The airports with upgraded Boingo Internet service are Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall, Logan, Chicago Midway International, Chicago O’Hare International, John F. Kennedy International, LaGuardia International, and Newark Liberty International.

Boingo describes the Wi-Fi upgrades as a “tiered’’ approach by offering multiple speed options depending on a traveler’s needs.
