After an opening-week victory that included 100 total points, BC High was eager to prove it could win in a variety of ways.

With a 36-0 drubbing of Leominster (2-1) Friday night at James Cotter Field, the Eagles proved their multidimensionality, riding a dominant defensive performance to their second win of the year.

“Our defense played really well tonight,’’ said Eagles coach Jon Bartlett. “Going in it was a good game plan and the kids executed very well.

It wasn’t just the defense, however; senior quarterback Connor Cady led a diverse running attack, notching 146 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries. Cady added a third touchdown through the air.

BC High (2-0) opened the scoring on its second possession.

After driving the ball 48 yards to the Leominster 7-yard line, Cady connected with senior running back Jack Walsh on a play-action rollout. A successful 2-point conversion put BC up, 8-0.

After stymying Leominster on the ensuing possession, BC picked up right where it left off.

With a fake handoff throwing the Blue Devils’ defense off Cady’s scent, the quarterback scampered 40 yards into the end zone, extending the lead to 15-0.

“Our running game is the strongest part of our offense,’’ Cady said. “The offensive line did an incredible job making holes for us today.’’

Cady’s counterpart in the running game, star junior back and Boston College commit Danny Abraham, finished the evening with 135 yards on 20 carries.

Still, it was the Eagles’ defense that dominated the evening. Led by juniors Elijah Miranda and Will Bowen, the unit held Leominster to just 37 yards of total offense in the first half.

Eight of Leominster’s 10 offensive possessions on the night ended in 3-and-outs.

“We had to keep [Noah] Gray in the pocket,’’ Bartlett said. “That was critical for us.’’

That they did, as the Blue Devils senior quarterback/defensive back finished with a paltry 21 passing yards on just 2 of 13 passing.

Gray did do his part on the defensive side, attempting to stunt the Eagles’ momentum with two interceptions on Cady passes late in the first half.

It wouldn’t be nearly enough.

The Eagles started to separate themselves in the third quarter.

Showing a plethora of offensive looks, BC made its way into Leominster territory just two minutes into the half.

Then, the Eagles came with the dagger.

Putting his quickness on full display, Cady juked his way to a 37-yard touchdown run, a dazzling effort in front of a raucous BC High crowd.

“Danny obviously is an outstanding back and a lot of teams are going to key on him, but we have other weapons as well,’’ said Bartlett.

“We just have to continue to mix it up like we have been and have faith in all of our guys.’’

On the Eagles’ next possession, Walsh notched his second touchdown of the evening, a 1-yard run.

Junior backup quarterback Matt Sullivan put a cap on the scoring late in the fourth quarter with a 70-yard keeper.
