Dad charged in death of son left in truck

PALM HARBOR — A Tampa-area father has been charged with aggravated manslaughter in the death of his 23-month-old son, who was left in a pickup truck for eight hours. Troy Whitaker, 41, of Palm Harbor, placed his son Lawson and 5-year-old daughter in his truck Friday morning and took the girl to school, the Pinellas County sheriff’s office said. Whitaker then drove home without taking Lawson to day care and left him unattended until late afternoon. (AP)

Voter rights groups win court ruling

The US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia has blocked Kansas, Georgia, and Alabama from requiring residents to prove they are US citizens when registering to vote using a national form. The 2-to-1 ruling Friday was a victory for voting rights groups who said a US election official illegally changed proof-of-citizenship requirements on the federal registration form at the behest of the three states.
