Argentina went 3-0 in the group stage. Venezuela was 2-0-1, tying Mexico in its final match to fall into second place on the goal-difference tiebreaker.

Venezuela is led by West Bromwich Albion striker Salomon Rondon, who scored once in the group stage. In 21 meetings, Argentina is 20-1-0 against Venezuela.
