Hamilton-Wenham girls’ cross-country team had four runners finish in the top five to defeat Pentucket, 18-43, and tie the sport’s national record unbeaten streak of 133 held by New Jersey’s Ridgewood High School.

The Generals started their streak on Oct. 13, 2004. Ridgewood amassed its record over a 22-year span.

“We looked good today,’’ said Hamilton-Wenham coach Steve Sawyer following the meet at Pipestave Hill in West Newbury, “and we came through with flying colors.’’

Senior Olivia Hergan (19:52), junior Grace Moroney (20:07), junior Anna Cassidento (20:35), sophomore Anabell Howley (20:39), and junior Rebecca Erhard (21:06) dominated the three-mile course finishing first, second, fourth, fifth and sixth respectively.

The Generals had runners finish eighth and ninth as well.

The course consisted of two hills and went through the woods. Sawyer called the course “tough’’ but neither sweat nor the weather caused the runners any trouble.

Sawyer has coached the Generals since 1979 and also coaches the boy’s cross country team.

Hamilton-Wenham has a chance to break Ridgewood ‘s record when the Generals meet Newburyport next Wednesday at Patton Park.
