Jason Pominville and Erik Haula each had a goal and two assists Sunday, and the Minnesota Wild celebrated the first outdoor game in franchise history with a 6-1 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks.
In front of a crowd of 50,426 at TCF Bank Stadium on the University of Minnesota campus with an ideal faceoff temperature of 35 degrees, the Wild turned the NHL’s 17th edition of open-air hockey into a romp past their postseason nemesis and primary rival.
The Blackhawks pulled goalie Corey Crawford for Scott Darling after 19 saves in two periods.
Nino Niederreiter and Ryan Carter each added a goal and an assist, and Matt Dumba and Thomas Vanek also scored.
Patrick Kane ended Devan Dubnyk’s shutout bid with his Western Conference-leading 35th goal midway through the third period.
Dubnyk stopped 31 shots.
Ten players tallied at least 1 point for the Wild, including all three former Golden Gophers in Vanek, Haula, and Mike Reilly, whose college careers took place across the street at Mariucci Arena.
The Wild improved to 4-0 under interim coach John Torchetti and 3-0 this season against the Blackhawks, the team that has eliminated them from the playoffs in each of the past three years. The Wild have scored a whopping 21 goals in those four games since the firing last week of head coach Mike Yeo.
Despite the state’s rich history and nation-leading participation in the sport, the Wild had to wait awhile to play in an outdoor game. They became the 20th team to do so since the league first staged one in 2003. The Colorado Avalanche will be the 21st when they host a Stadium Series game next weekend.
The space between the boards and the front row of the lower seating bowl was covered in fake snow and dotted with 211 evergreens for an up-north look, except for the oversized NHL, Blackhawks and Wild logos.
There were plenty of Blackhawks fans mixed in among the locals, but they quickly went quiet. Carter took two whacks at the net on a breakaway, before Dumba swooped in to knock in the rebound just 3:25 into the game. Dumba wore excessive eye black, looking like one of the football players who usually call this facility home.
Vanek tipped in a power-play shot by Pominville a few minutes later, and the Wild never let up. They took a 3-0 lead early in the second period with some slick tic-tac-toe passing from Pominville behind the net to Haula up high to Niederreiter down low.
Pominville and Vanek played together with the Buffalo Sabres in the 2008 outdoor game, the first in the United States for the NHL.
The only negative for the Wild was an injury to left wing Jason Zucker, who took an elbow to the jaw from Blackhawks defenseman Michal Rozsival in the second period and needed help to shuffle off after lying still on his side for a few minutes while five members of the Wild’s medical staff examined him.
The back of Zucker’s head slammed on the ice after the collision with Rozsival, who was ejected for the hit and given a five-minute major penalty. Zucker was taken away on a cart.
Rangers 1, Red Wings 0 — Kevin Klein scored on a 2-on-1 break at 1:59 of overtime as host New York beat Detroit, spoiling a magnificent effort by Red Wings goaltender Jimmy Howard.
Henrik Lundqvist made 22 saves in picking up his fourth shutout and helping the Rangers win for the seventh time in nine games (7-1-1).
Howard made 29 saves as the Red Wings lost their sixth straight road game, their longest skid since March 2012.
However, he forced the OT with a pad save on a penalty shot by Jesper Fast with 5:25 left in regulation and then a sliding pad save on Fast in close with 3:45 to go.
Kevin Hayes led the 2-on-1 with Klein after Lundqvist barely stopped a shot by Gustav Nyquist in close. Hayes slid the puck to the defenseman on the left side and his shot found the top right hand corner of the net.
Penguins 4, Sabres 3 — UMass-Lowell product Scott Wilson sparked a two-goal second period and the rookie extended his goal streak to three games, helping visiting Pittsburgh beat Buffalo for the eighth straight time.
The Penguins also got goals from Patric Hornqvist, Phil Kessel, and Matt Cullen, who scored on a shorthanded breakaway in the third period.
Kris Letang had three assists and Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 24 shots in returning after missing a game due to illness.
Zach Bogosian scored twice, and added an assist, and Brian Gionta had a goal and assist for Buffalo, which had a 3-0-1 streak snapped. Bogosian’s second goal came with 22 seconds left and Buffalo’s net empty.
Coming off consecutive last-place seasons, the Sabres haven’t had a five-game point streak since a 7-0-2 run in March 2012.
The Penguins haven’t lost to the Sabres since a 4-2 defeat on April 23, 2013. And they've won six straight games at Buffalo.
Lightning 4, Hurricanes 2 — Ryan Callahan scored twice and Steven Stamkos had a goal and an assist to propel visiting Tampa Bay to its third straight win.
Stamkos put Tampa Bay ahead 3-2 on a power play with 5:43 left, and Callahan added an empty-netter with less than 10 seconds remaining.
Ben Bishop had 29 saves for Tampa Bay and improved to 6-1 in his career against Carolina. J.T. Brown also scored for the Lightning.
Joakim Nordstrom and Michal Jordan scored for the Hurricanes, and Cam Ward made 14 saves. Carolina has lost two of three.
Stamkos scored by sneaking in on a change during Tampa Bay’s fourth power play and ripping Tyler Johnson’s pass from behind the net past Ward.
Tampa Bay is 25-2-3 when scoring three or more goals this season.
Ducks 5, Flames 2 — Ryan Kesler had two goals and an assist, John Gibson made 22 saves, and Anaheim returned from a seven-game road trip and secured its fifth consecutive victory.
Captain Ryan Getzlaf extended his point streak to eight games with a third-period goal for the streaking Ducks, who have won 12 of 14 to improve to 19-4-2 since Christmas. Anaheim also trimmed Los Angeles’ lead to two points atop the Pacific Division.
Patrick Maroon and Kevin Bieksa also had power-play goals as Anaheim beat the Flames at home for the 22nd consecutive time.
Captain Mark Giordano scored his career-best 15th goal and former Ducks goalie Jonas Hiller stopped 28 shots for the Flames, who have lost four of five.
Mikael Backlund added a last-minute goal for Calgary, which hasn’t won a regular-season game at Honda Center since Jan. 19, 2004.
