Neighbors were temporarily forced from their Attleboro homes on Sunday afternoon as police investigated a suspected methamphetamine lab discovered after a 52-year-old resident was hospitalized for a potential overdose.
Robert Acheson was taken to Sturdy Memorial Hospital, but police did not release any details about his condition.
He has been charged with manufacturing crystal methamphetamine and is scheduled for arraignment Monday in Attleboro District Court.
Officers discovered the suspected drug lab while responding to reports of an overdose at Acheson’s Knight Avenue home at about 12:40 p.m., police said in a statement.
During the investigation, neighbors in the two houses to the right and left of Acheson’s home were evacuated.
In addition, a section of Knight Avenue from South Main Street to Church Street was shut down.
Local law enforcement authorities, the State Police, hazardous materials teams, and a regional task force from the federal Drug Enforcement Administration worked to collect evidence and dismantle the lab throughout the afternoon, authorities said.
Officials discovered chemicals, containers, and drug paraphernalia inside Acheson’s home, according to police.
Once the initial investigation was completed, a specially equipped cleaning service removed dangerous chemicals from the area, police said.
A message left at a phone number listed for Acheson was not returned.
Carol Cherry, who lives at the northern end of the street, said the police cars and fire engines made her think there was a fire.
She never imagined there would be a drug problem on her street, she said, not even when her daughter joked about police responding to a meth lab.
“I told her, ‘No way,’ ’’ Cherry said. “I was surprised to learn that was what it actually was.’’
