Police solve a WWI saga

A dog tag belonging to a World War I veteran has found its way home to the soldier’s family. Randolph police returned the military ID of Joseph E. Hughes to his family after the public sent in tips to help locate the relatives, police said in a Facebook post.

In early September, the tag was found on the side of a road in Randolph. Police took to Facebook to ask for help in identifying Hughes’s family.

Within 24 hours, tips and leads had flooded in. Police were able to contact the veteran’s namesake, his eldest grandson.

Joseph E. Hughes was born in 1889 in Brookline, one of nine children. He joined the Army, serving in Europe from 1917 to 1919. After the war, he settled in Roxbury with his wife and three children, police said.

“While it still remains a mystery how the dog tag ended up on the side of the road . . . the mystery of its origin and the man behind it has been solved,’’ police said.
