Petersen, ND shut down BU
from staff and wire reports

Cal Petersen made 39 saves and Dylan Malmquist scored at 11:47 of the second period as Notre Dame edged Boston University, 1-0, on Saturday night in South Bend, Ind., costing the Terriers a bye in the Hockey East tournament.

The loss, combined with UMass Lowell’s win over Boston College, dropped ninth-ranked BU (19-10-5, 12-6-4) into a tie for fourth with the River Hawks, who won the tiebreaker to gain the final bye. BU will face UMass in the best-of-three series next weekend at Agganis Arena.

No. 10 Notre Dame (19-8-7, 15-5-2) earned the third seed and a bye.

NU 7, Maine 1 — Zach Austin-Reese had a goal and two assists and the Huskies (16-13-5, 10-8-4) got goals from seven players in a rout of the visiting Black Bears (8-22-6, 5-15-2) to end the regular season with a seven-game winning streak. The teams will meet in the opening round of the Hockey East tournament next weekend at Matthews Arena.

Providence 6, UMass 0 — Trevor Mingoia and Mark Jankowski combined for four goals and five assists and the fifth-ranked Friars (25-5-4, 16-3-3) earned a share of the Hockey East title with Boston College by blasting the visiting Minutemen (8-22-4, 2-16-4).

Merrimack 2, Vermont 0 — Ludvig Larsson and Ben Bahe scored in the third period and Drew Vogler made 26 saves to lift the host Warriors (11-16-7, 5-10-7 Hockey East) past the Catamounts (12-20-3, 6-13-3). The win secured the seventh seed for Vermont in the HE tournament.?

Women’s hockey

BC 5, Maine 1 — Five players scored and the No. 1 Eagles improved to 36-0 by finishing off a sweep of Maine in the best-of-three first-round Hockey East tournament series at Conte Forum.

Maine (10-23-2) struck first, getting a goal from Brooklyn Langlois just 4:54 into the game. Haley Skarupa answered at 16:26 of the period with her 30th goal and BC took over in a three-goal second period.

NU 6, Providence 2 — Kendall Coyne had three goals and an assist to give her a school-record and NCAA-leading 82 points this season and the No. 6 Huskies (28-7-1) rolled to a sweep of the visiting Friars (10-24-2) in their Hockey East matchup.

Vermont 4, BU 2 — Saana Valkama scored two goals, including an empty-netter with 21 seconds left that helped the Catamounts (9-24-3) edge the host Terriers (21-13-2) and force a deciding third game in the Hockey East quarterfinal series.

UConn 4, New Hampshire 3 — Leah Buress scored the tying goal with 41 seconds in regulation and the winning goal 3:17 into the third overtime, lifting the host Huskies (17-14-5) to a sweep of the Wildcats (11-24-1) in their first-round Hockey East tournament series.

Men’s basketball

BU 83, Holy Cross 68 — Eric Fanning scored 25 points as the host Terriers (18-13, 11-7) ended the regular season by beating the Crusaders (10-19, 5-13) and clinching the No. 3 seed and a bye in the Patriot League tournament.

John Papale scored 16 points and Blaise Mbargorba, a 6-foot-11-inch junior, scored a career-high 15 on 7-for-7 shooting as BU broke a two-game skid by shooting 58 percent from the field (32 of 55) and outrebounding Holy Cross, 37-22.

Robert Champion had 14 points for Holy Cross, which ended the season with five straight losses. The Crusaders travel to face the No. 8 seed in the league tourney’s knockout first round on Tuesday.

NU 61, Drexel 59 — David Walker scored 20 points and the Huskies (17-14, 9-9 Colonial Athletic) erased a late 11-point deficit to beat the host Dragons (5-24, 3-15).

Zach Stahl hit a layup tto put NU ahead, 60-59, with 29 seconds to go. Tavon Allen and Rashann London both missed jumpers on the next possession and the Huskies held on. Stahl finished with 12 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists for the Huskies.

St. Bonaventure 85, UMass 83 — Marcus Posely scored what turned out to be the winning 3-point play with 13 seconds left as the host Bonnies (20-7, 12-4 Atlantic 10) got past the Minutemen (12-16, 5-11).

Jabarie Hinds added 25, including a layup with 29 seconds left that had given UMass an 83-81 lead.

Providence 87, DePaul 66 — Ben Bentil scored 16 of his 28 points in the second half and the struggling Friars (20-9, 8-8 Big East) got a much-needed win by pulling away from the visiting Blue Demons (9-19, 3-13).

Kyron Cartwright added 16 points and eight assists for Providence, which had lost two straight and five of six in its quest for a third-consecutive 20-win season.

Binghamton 78, Maine 66 — Issac Vann scored 26 points for the visiting Black Bears (8-21, 4-12 America East), but the Bearcats (8-21, 5-11) rolled in the regular-season finale for both teams.

New Hampshire 78, UMBC 69 — Jaleen Smith hit a key jump shot with just over a minute left, then made 5 of 6 free throws as the host Wildcats (18-11, 10-5 America East) held off the Retrievers (7-24, 3-13). The Wildcats have secured a home game in the America East tournament, earning either a third or fourth seed.

Rhode Island 75, Dayton 66 — Jared Terrell scored 18 points, Four McGlynn made four 3-pointers and scored 16, and the visiting Rams (16-13, 8-8 Atlantic 10) split the season series against the Flyers (22-6, 12-4).

Texas 76, Oklahoma 63 — Isaiah Taylor scored 18 points and the No. 25 Longhorns overwhelmed the third-ranked Sooners in Austin.

Buddy Hield, a leading candidate for national player of the year, scored 33 points for Oklahoma (22-6, 10-6 Big 12). Connor Lammert and Javan Felix scored 14 points each for Texas (19-10, 10-6).

Villanova 89, Marquette 79 — Kris Jenkins scored 19 points, Josh Hart had 19 on 7-of-8 shooting, and the top-ranked Wildcats (25-4, 14-2 Big East) pulled away to beat the host Golden Eagles (18-11, 7-9).

Women’s basketball

Notre Dame 70, BC 58 — Madison Cable had 20 points and five steals to lead the No. 2 Fighting Irish (28-1, 16-0) to their third straight regular-season ACC title and a win over the visiting Eagles. Kelly Hughes scored 16 points to lead BC (14-15, 2-14).

Notre Dame improved to 54-1 in the ACC since joining the league in 2013, including postseason play.

UConn 80, Tulane 40 — Freshman Katie Lou Samuelson scored 21 points and the top-ranked Huskies (28-0, 17-0 American) extended the third-longest winning streak in program and women’s NCAA history to 65 games.

Holy Cross 74, BU 50 — Lisa Mifsud scored 21 points as the host Crusaders (13-15, 10-7 Patriot) rolled past the Terriers (3-25, 3-14).

UMass 80, La Salle 57 — Alyssa Lawrence scored 19 points to help the host Minutewomen (11-17, 5-11 Atlantic 10) beat the Explorers (5-24, 2-14) for their fifth straight win.
