HALIFAX — Authorities on Saturday evening called off their search for a man who had fallen from his kayak into the Silver Lake Friday, but plan to resume Sunday morning.
The man, who was said to be in his mid-20s, was fishing with a friend near the middle of the lake when he fell in, officials at the scene said on Friday. The friend was fishing in a canoe.
Ted Broderick, Halifax’s chief of police, said the lake’s silty bottom was making it difficult for divers to search.
“Our divers are doing the best they can,’’ he said, “but they’re essentially diving blind.’’
Officials said it was unclear what caused the man to fall from his kayak and that it is “highly unlikely’’ that he was wearing a life vest or using a flotation device.
State Police divers, along with local response teams, searched the lake for hours Friday and Saturday, but were unable to find the man, whose name has not been released.
Divers were using a sonar scanner to aid their search Saturday, according to State Police spokesman David Procopio. The scanner uses sound waves to detect large objects on the lake floor.
The scanners located “points of interest’’ before noon in the lake, which is believed to be about 50 feet deep, said Plymouth County Technical Rescue Team spokesman Rob Tripp. But nothing was found.
Dive teams from Plymouth County and Wareham were supporting the search.
