There’s a reason you haven’t seen Mayor Martin J. Walsh at too many dedication ceremonies, book signings, and ribbon cuttings this week.
Walsh has taken some time off — a little “family time,’’ if you will. His public schedule has been blank for three days, and word around City Hall is that Walsh is taking a break.
The mayor, as required by city rules, did notify the city clerk’s office that he would be out of the office from Tuesday through Sunday. But without any other public notice, some Boston residents have been left to guess where the mayor is.
Is he sunning on the Cape?
Is he relaxing at his new home in Dorchester?
Did he jet to Dublin to watch his alma mater, Boston College, take on Georgia Tech at the Aer Lingus College Football Classic this Saturday?
Walsh officials quashed the Ireland speculation, saying emphatically he is not going to the game and he’s not in Ireland.
“The mayor is spending time with family outside of the city, but is frequently in touch with his staff and is traveling back and forth to Boston for various events,’’ said Bonnie McGilpin, a spokeswoman for the mayor.
Indeed, on Tuesday, the mayor attended a 5:15 p.m. event called Countdown to Kindergarten at the Boston Children’s Museum. And he’s the second speaker on Monday morning’s lineup for the Greater Boston Labor Council’s annual Labor Day breakfast at the Park Plaza Hotel, officials said.
The mayor often keeps a whirlwind pace, with meetings with various community groups, Cabinet members, and other public events. He flew to Beijing in June for a two day conference on climate change. After his plane touched down returning to Logan Airport, Walsh headed straight to the scene of a fatal shooting outside a Dorchester high school.
The mayor’s Twitter accounts didn’t give many clues to his vacation whereabouts. On Friday@marty_walsh welcomed the Boston Transportation Department to Twitter with a retweet. The mayor’s other twitter account — @martywalsh_ma — posted a tweet on Tuesday that hailed an initiative “giving kids the testing and training they need in order to succeed.’’
Walsh’s public schedule has been light recently — although many of his meetings are not announced to the public or media. For example, Walsh said he’d had a hectic day at an Aug. 26 meeting in the Eagle Room at City Hall. But the only event noted on Walsh’s public schedule that day was an evening appearance during a Red Sox pregame ceremony with Boston Area Church League representatives at Fenway Park.
Last Saturday, Walsh attended a Unity Day celebration at the Mary Ellen McCormack housing development in South Boston, the schedule showed. He also addressed the Caribbean Carnival ribbon cutting and marched in the parade down Martin Luther King Boulevard.
The mayor had no public events scheduled last Sunday and Monday.
