HINGHAM — Back on Dec. 22, in just their fourth game of the season, the Hingham Harbormen fell to St. Mary’s after giving up four goals to the Spartans. Led by a two-goal performance from captain Marc O’Rourke, the No. 5 Harbormen learned from their mistakes in redeeming the loss with a 3-0 shutout over the No. 4 Spartans Monday night at Pilgrim Ice Rink.

“A couple different things caught us in that game: penalties, and not knowing how to finish off some of the chances that we did have,’’ said Hingham coach Tony Messina of his team’s December loss to St. Mary’s. “We used it as motivation today.’’

The Harbormen (8-1-2) dominated time of possession throughout the contest, peppering Spartans netminder Andrew LoRusso through long stretches of offensive-zone pressure. Halfway through the second and leading 1-0, Hingham cashed in on that pressure with O’Rourke’s first goal of the evening.

St. Mary’s failed to clear the defensive zone with eight minutes remaining in the second and the Spartans paid for it when O’Rourke took a pass along the far boards before sliding over to the middle of the blue line and letting go a twisted wrist shot that beat LoRusso glove side.

“[O’Rourke] brings an offensive aspect for a defensemen,’’ said Messina. “He’s tremendously skilled, he gets the puck in motion, he’s very dangerous, and he’s a very good leader.’’

The senior captain would net his second with 5:23 to go in the contest to put the game on ice for the Harbormen.

O’Rourke snuck down low to the left side of LoRusso and received a pass from fellow senior blue liner Jeff Gordon. The defenseman quickly one-timed the puck past LoRusso for the three-score lead.

Although LoRusso kept the Spartans in it with big save after big save, Hingham’s Robbie Kornack (24 saves) matched his counterpart, posting a shutout for the second game in a row and for the fourth time this season.

“[Kornack] worked so hard in the offseason — in the fall and the summer — trying to be our starting goalie,’’ said O’Rourke.

“He’s just been huge for us this whole season. He’s the backbone of our defense.’’

After LoRusso turned aside a barrage of shots by Hingham in the opening frame, the Harbormen finally broke through in the final minute of the first.

Senior forward Jack Hennessy broke through the neutral zone, skating around two St. Mary’s defensemen. LoRusso knocked the puck away but Drew Hickey cleaned up the rebound to give the Harbormen a 1-0 lead.

The win was Hingham’s sixth over a ranked opponent, and fourth in the last five games.

“If we keep what we’re doing up, we’re going to be going places,’’ said O’Rourke. “I think we’re back on the map, hopefully we’ll be back in the Super 8, but we’ll take it one game at a time and see where it takes us.’’
