If you’ve been looking for a reason to wear glittery wings and throw around pixie dust, you’re in luck. Fairy Day is coming.

Taking place Sept. 10 at Somerville’s Assembly Square, Fairies in Boston is the inaugural event by Dress Up Boston, launched by Medford sisters Julia and Antonia Pugliese.

Planned initially as a meet-up event on Facebook, Fairies in Boston has grown quickly, with hundreds of people interested in the event.

The fairies will meet at Assembly Square’s Welcome Center at 1 p.m. before moving onto a grassy area for photo ops.

“It’s not going to be a very structured day,’’ Antonia said. “There’s a lot of stuff to do there. They can go to Legoland, they can go to Riverfest.’’

As for the dressing up part? How extreme you want to go is up to you.

“What I really love is going to a thrift store and buying floofy, flouncy things, and then going to the craft store and buying some ribbons, flowers, butterflies – you can find all kinds of great things,’’ Julia said. “Hot glue is your best friend.’’

In the event of inclement weather, the rain date is Sept. 24.

Describing itself as a community “for people who love excuses to dress up and look amazing,’’ Dress Up Boston grew out of the Pugliese sisters’ love of dressing up for its own sake.

They mentioned the ease of finding dress-up communities in Los Angeles and New York and felt that a group like this is “long overdue’’ in Boston.

“I think at one point Julia was complaining to me that she didn’t have enough friends who would just dress up and go out to a restaurant in cool clothes,’’ Antonia said. They resolved to do something about it.

Dress Up Boston currently has more than 500 members on Facebook, a number that Julia and Antonia hope to see grow.

In the meantime, Dress Up Boston is already looking forward to its next event. They’re calling it “An Unfortunate Day at the Beach.’’ You’ll want to pack the sunscreen, the black lace parasol, and a copy of Lemony Snicket’s Unfortunate Events.
