School officials canceled Plymouth South High School’s varsity and junior varsity football games set for Friday and Saturday, citing “inappropriate behavior’’ at a parent-sponsored gathering for players.

Plymouth Schools Superintendent Gary E. Maestas revealed the action Friday in a statement. He said the incident did not involve alcohol or drugs, but he did not provide any details about what prompted officials to forfeit the games.

The varsity team had been scheduled to play Hanover High School in Hanover Friday evening followed by a junior varsity matchup Saturday in Plymouth, according to a school calendar.

Hanover High coach Chris Landolfi said he learned of the decision at practice Thursday evening.

“Unbelievable,’’ said Landolfi, who has directed the Indians to a 3-0 start this year, including the forfeited win against Plymouth South.

“This hurts our kids. It gives them one less game film for [colleges] and hurts their stats. Plus, we had a number of college recruiters coming down for that game,’’ he said.

In his statement, Maestas said Plymouth South administrators met with parents and players.

“The administration at Plymouth South believes that the forfeiture of this game is part of a learning process for our student athletes and is apologetic to Hanover High School for this inconvenience,’’ he said.

Maestas declined to comment further.

Plymouth Police Chief Michael Botieri said school officials are handling the matter.

“With the information that was relayed to the police department, there’s no police involvement at this time,’’ he said.

Scott Fry, Plymouth South’s athletic director and football coach, referred all questions to Maestas’s statement. He said the freshman squad will still compete against Hanover this weekend while the other teams plan to play Scituate next week. The freshmen game is scheduled for Saturday morning in Plymouth, a school calendar said.

Members of the Plymouth School Committee and Board of Selectmen declined to comment or did not respond to messages Friday.

On short notice, Landolfi said he lined up a junior varsity game for Hanover against Bridgewater-Raynham for Saturday.

The varsity squad does not have a game set for the weekend of Oct. 21-22 , and Landolfi said he is trying to arrange another varsity game for that weekend.
