Regarding “A ‘Roots’ for right now’’ (Sunday Arts, May 29): I had given birth to my daughter, Francine, on Jan. 30, 1977, which was also the date of the eighth and final episode of the original “Roots.’’ Because VCRs were not yet mass-marketed, my only request of my nurse was that a television be made available in my hospital room so that I could view the final episode of this riveting miniseries.

The first seven episodes had gotten me through the final days of my pregnancy, and nothing was going to cause me to miss the conclusion of this “other’’ iconic event of that particular day.
