For all his talent and sophistication, actor Tom Hiddleston hasn’t sampled the rarified air of mega-stardom, the kind where most every woman — and some men — hyperventilate or even weep if they happen to see him in a Starbucks.
The 35-year-old Brit is probably better off. He’s had, after all, an obsessive cult following for years, thanks to his recurring role as Loki in “The Avengers’’ and the “Thor’’ films, as well as parts in higher-brow fare like “Midnight in Paris’’ and Jim Jarmusch’s “Only Lovers Left Alive.’’
Through it all, Hiddleston has remained fairly anonymous to the masses. But that may be about to change.
On Feb. 12, AMC unveiled a trailer for a six-episode miniseries, “The Night Manager,’’ premiering in April. Based on the John le Carre novel, the series stars Hiddleston as Jonathan Pine, a former soldier and now manager of an elegant hotel, who is recruited to spy on bad guy Richard Roper, played by — wait for it — the incomparable Hugh Laurie.
If that isn’t enough to make you set your Tivo immediately, check out the trailer. Yes, that is Hiddleston sans shirt, Hiddleston staring piercingly at Roper’s blonde GF, Hiddleston looking angry, intense, sweaty.
The locations only add to the intrigue. Every scene conjures the Mediterranean, with seaside views and balmy climes, and Pine is often outfitted in linen and tailored suits and other trappings befitting a sometime spy.
Sure, it’s only six episodes. But considering what AMC shows did for the careers of Jon Hamm and Bryan Cranston, “The Night Manager’’ could be a game-changer for Hiddleston.
Let the hyperventilating begin.
