June is an intriguing time for sports fans, with the NBA and NHL crowning their champions.
But this year will bring added excitement for soccer enthusiasts with the monthlong Copa America international soccer tournament beginning Friday.
Here’s what you need to know, which includes some games at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough.
The Tournament
First played in 1916 in Argentina, with Uruguay defeating the hosts for the championship. This year will mark the first time it will be played outside of South America, with the United States serving as the host country.
From June 3-26, 32 matches will be played in 10 US cities. There are 16 teams in the tournament: 10 from CONMEBOL (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela) and six from CONCACAF (Costa Rica, Jamaica, Mexico, United States, Panama, and Haiti.)
The US will open the tournament Friday night against Colombia at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. The championship will be held in East Rutherford, N.J. at MetLife Stadium on June 26.
Gillette to host
Gillette Stadium will host three matches. Chile will face Bolivia on Friday, June 10 at 7 p.m. Traditional power Brazil will be in town to play Peru on Sunday, June 12 at 8:30 p.m., and a quarterfinal match will be played on Saturday, June 18 at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at Ticketmaster.
Revolution ties
Three members of the New England Revolution were named to the provisional 40-man rosters for their respective countries. Midfielder Lee Nguyen (US), defender Je-Vaughn Watson (Jamaica), and midfielder Zachary Herivaux (Haiti) were eligible to be selected to their team’s final rosters. Neither Nguyen or Herivaux were tabbed, leaving Watson as the only member of the Revolution in the tournament.
Group play
The 16 countries are divided into four groups of four, with the top two teams from each group advancing into the quarterfinals. The US will play in Group A, along with Colombia, Costa Rica, and Paraguay. Brazil is in Group B with Haiti, Peru, and Ecuador, while Group C will consist of Jamaica, Venezuela, Mexico and Uruguay. Rounding out the field are Panama, Bolivia, Argentina, and Chile in Group D.
