The Billerica girls’ basketball team wasn’t thinking about last year’s Division 1 North final loss to Andover entering Tuesday night’s matchup with the No. 3 Golden Warriors.
The Indians were focused solely on the task at hand and used two key second-half adjustments to capture a 56-42 home victory.
“We really didn’t do too much talking about last year,’’ Billerica coach Chris Doneski said.
Senior guard Maura Baronas led the Indians with 13 points and junior forward Kelsey Leverone added 12.
Andover (2-1) was without one of its two 6-footers, junior Alyssa Casey, who is recovering from a foot injury.
“That honestly gave us a lot of help,’’ Doneski said of Casey’s absence.
Andover’s other 6-footer, junior Jillian Webber, was limited to just 14 points by Billerica junior forward Maya Thompson.
“Maya held Webber to no points in the third quarter,’’ Doneski said. “Webber has a couple inches on her.’’
The score was tied at 12 after the first quarter, and Andover held a 27-25 lead at halftime.
Doneski said the Indians (3-0) made two adjustments after halftime that helped them pull away.
“I think we were overcommitting to Webber,’’ he said. “And we limited turnovers. We had a lot of turnovers in the first half. They did a much better job in the second half.’’
The Indians surged after coming out of the locker room and took a 42-34 lead into the final frame.
“We played a real good third quarter,’’ Doneski said.
Hanover 55, Duxbury 44 — Hayley Wardwell scored a game-high 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, while Stephanie Flynn added 11 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Indians (3-0).
Braintree 60, Brookline 39 — Brianna Herlihy netted a game-high 20 points while Mackenzie Moore added 11 points to pace the second-ranked Wamps (4-0).
