North Shore Bank has donated $1,500 to the Northeast Animal Shelter in Salem, one of the largest nonprofit no-kill shelters in New England. The proceeds were raised by bank employees in July as part of their weekly “Jeans Day’’ program where — in exchange for $5 each week — staff can wear jeans to work. The funds are then donated to a local charity. The shelter has placed over 125,000 cats and dogs since it opened in 1976. Visit northeastanimalshelter.org.

For six weeks this summer, about 750 cadets ages 9 to 11 from Middlesex County participated in the 17th annual Youth Public Safety Academy at the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office Training Academy in Chelmsford. The six one-week sessions are offered at a low cost and allow the cadets to participate in exercises. This year, they included fire hazard training; team building at the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Billerica; K9 demonstrations; and visits with police and fire officials.

The Museum of Science is hosting its eighth annual September Salem Days, which welcome all Salem residents to the museum free of charge. The program is funded by the Norman H. Read Trust. There is a free MBTA ride for the 10:40 a.m. train to North Station led by Mayor Kimberley Driscoll on Saturday, Sept. 24, and a free return trip anytime that day. Parking in the city-owned lot at the Salem MBTA station also will be free to residents that day.

Allie Hunter McDade has joined the Police Assisted Addiction and Recovery Initiative as the team’s first full-time executive director. Since it began last summer in Gloucester, the initiative has helped those struggling with addiction by establishing a network of more than 150 police departments and 300 treatment providers nationwide. The initiative was started by Gloucester Police Chief Leonard Campanello and businessman John Rosenthal to support the Gloucester Police ANGEL Initiative, which offers help instead of jail for those struggling with substance abuse.
