Police arrested a juvenile Monday night on a murder charge in connection with a shooting over the weekend in Chelsea that left a teenager dead and seven other people injured, the Suffolk district attorney’s office said.

State and Chelsea police arrested the 16-year-old Lynn teenager for the shooting that killed Pablo Villeda, 19, in the area of 120 Washington Ave. at about 2:40 a.m. Sunday, District Attorney Daniel F. Conley and Chelsea Police Chief Brian Kyes said in a joint statement.

“Though juveniles accused of murder are automatically charged as adults under Massachusetts law, authorities are withholding his name in an abundance of caution until a criminal complaint issues’’ Tuesday morning, the statement said, adding that the suspect’s arraignment in Chelsea District Court is expected to be open to the public.

According to authorities, Villeda and the other victims were attending a party at a vacant apartment on Washington Avenue when the shots rang out.

Besides Villeda, the other victims ranged in age from 15 to 22 and suffered “injuries that ranged from minor to very serious,’’ the statement said.

Kyes added that “Chelsea police approached this case with urgency and professionalism from the moment it was called in. We cannot and we will not tolerate this level of gun violence, especially when it leaves our young people dead and injured.’’

Conley commended witnesses who stepped forward but also stressed that “our investigation is still very active. Anyone who has additional information on Mr. Villeda’s death or the shootings of six young men and women is urged to share it with police.’’

Six of the surviving injured were gunshot victims, and the seventh was hurt attempting to flee, officials have said.

On Sunday, neighbors who witnessed the chaotic scene said that a person jumped out of a window after the shots were fired.

Working telephone numbers for Villeda’s relatives could not be located late Monday night.

On Sunday, about 80 friends and classmates of Villeda’s gathered at Northeast Metropolitan Regional Vocational School in Wakefield, where he had attended school and played football.

His former teammates huddled around dozens of candles, friends told stories of his funniest moments, and classmates lamented the loss of someone so young.

“It was about healing. And it shows we care about him and about each other,’’ Pedro Del Toro, a 19-year-old friend of Villeda’s, told the Globe on Sunday.

Chelsea police detectives and state troopers assigned to Conley’s office are leading the investigation, with assistance from the State Police Crime Scene Services Section, the Ballistics Section, and the Revere barracks, among other assets, the joint statement said.
