Strong earthquake kills 6, injures 100
MANILA — At least six people were killed and more than 100 were injured when an earthquake struck the southern Philippines, officials said Saturday. The magnitude 6.7 quake hit northeast of the city of Surigao in the Mindanao region late Friday. It occurred at a depth of about 7 miles, and as many as 30 aftershocks followed over the next 10 hours. Surigao was plunged into darkness when the quake knocked out power. Some homes and a bridge were destroyed. (New York Times)

91 mosques target of vandals last year
BERLIN — The German Interior Ministry said 91 mosques were attacked in the country in 2016. Investigators said 21 attacks took place in the western German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, which is the country’s most populous state with a high number of Muslim immigrants. A ministry report released Friday did not detail the extent of the damage. Police identified suspects in 12 cases and made one arrest. (AP)

Two men charged in ISIS attack plots
ISTANBUL — Two men suspected of planning Islamic State attacks in Europe were arrested in Turkey after 10 days of interrogation by police, Turkey’s state-run agency reported Saturday. Mahamad Laban, 45, a Danish citizen, and Mohammed Tefik Saleh, 38, a Swedish citizen, received weapons and explosives training in Syria for the past three months, the Anadolu Agency said. It said Saleh’s wife informed authorities that he went to Syria to join ISIS in 2014. (AP)
