MIDWEST REGION
1. Virginia (28-7) vs. 4. Iowa State (23-11) on CBS at 7:10 p.m.: This is a classic matchup of a patient, defensive-minded team (Virginia) and a wide-open, offensive-minded team. Defense usually wins, right? That probably will be the case, as Virginia is highly skilled at controlling the pace and making the opponent uncomfortable. That being said, Iowa State’s Georges Niang, at 6-8 with perimeter skills, is a difficult matchup for anyone.
10. Syracuse (21-13) vs. 11. Gonzaga (28-7) on CBS at 9:40 p.m.: Syracuse has been inconsistent all season, so it might be ready to throw in a clunker after two victories. Still, its 2-3 zone gives most teams problems, and there is offensive talent in Michael Gbinije and Malachi Richardson. This is the worst Gonzaga team in a decade, but there’s still plenty of talent, especially big man Domantas Sabonis. The real key is guard play. It’s been good and bad all season, but lately it’s been outstanding. If Eric McClellan and Josh Perkins play well, the Zags will win.
EAST REGION
6. Notre Dame (23-11) vs. 7. Wisconsin (22-12) at TBS at 7:27 p.m.: Both teams stepped out of a grave to get here. The Irish are the better team; they can take advantage in the lane, led by big man Zach Auguste. Wisconsin will need to make a good amount of 3-pointers, and that’s where Notre Dame will need to concentrate its defense.
1. North Carolina (30-6) vs. 5. Indiana (27-7) on TBS at 9:57 p.m.: Indiana is underrated, which is pretty unusual for a Big Ten regular-season champion. Point guard Yogi Ferrell is an All-American, and there are multiple options surrounding him to create plenty of offense. Defending Carolina big men Brice Johnson and Kennedy Meeks might be a challenge, but Indiana freshman center Thomas Bryant is excellent. This one has potential to be a last-possession decision.
